LT2 is gettin old

LT2 has been one of the most prolific running backs in the history of fantasy football, but all good things must come to an end. Tomlinson could defy the odds and have another all-world season – he’s certainly capable. There are just a number of factors stacked against him, and if there’s a decent chance that he’ll drop off, aren’t you better off taking a stud wide receiver or alternate running back choice for your second round pick? Chances are, somebody will draft LT2 earlier in your draft based on name recognition anyway. Tomlinson will probably still be very good this year. He’s simply no longer worthy of an early first-round fantasy pick, which is a tough pill for many to swallow, considering he has been a consensus number one. Bottom line: Tomlinson is not “done”, but he is very likely not going to rebound all the way back to his “glory day” numbers in 2009. If he’s still on the board in the late first or early second round, and you’re thinking about him, carefully consider other options before picking Tomlinson. 260-1100-10-35-330-2.
Positives / Upside Forget numbers for a second: Tomlinson's physical ability is still supreme, despite recent physical setbacks. The Chargers rushing schedule has some tough games on it, no doubt, but we count eight "easy" games, which is very nice.
Negatives / Downside One set of risks would be his age and number of carries. Shaun Alexander. Priest Holmes. Marshall Faulk. Eric Dickerson. Roger Craig. Many former great fantasy backs failed to find success after hitting the age of thirty, which LT2 will turn this year. 2,500 carries also seems to be a historical stumbling block. Tomlinson has 2,657 carries and 510 receptions in his career. Whether or not his field vision is intact, or he has lost a step or not, there’s only so much pounding a human body can take. He has already had knee, toe, and groin problems recently. San Diego has a stud quarterback in Philip Rivers and isn’t afraid to air it out, abandoning the running game when necessary. The Chargers also have another capable back in Darren Sproles, so LT2 could certainly be rested in blowout situations.

Tomlinson not to play in Week 2
written by DaveGawron, September 18, 2009
Tomlinson has been ruled out for Week 2. You need to bench him this week. This is why we advised you to consider other options strongly before blowing a high pick on him this season, or at least drafting Darren Sproles as a handcuff. Sproles will carry the load and Michael Bennett will also get some touches against the Ravens this week, but expect more passing from San Diego, in general, with LT2 on the shelf.
