The great thing is, he has been going in the fourth round in drafts so far (or later), so you can wait on him (I'd target him in the third) yet get early second round value for the games when he's healthy, especially if Bush gets hurt again. He's a fairly solid choice in 09. 180-810-8-35-300-1.
Positives / Upside Playing for a big contract. His numbers were concentrated in the final several games last year, so he could fly under the radar in your draft. Having Drew Brees throwing behind you makes running easy. Brees should provide Thomas with ample goal line opportunities. Defense could even improve, allowing Thomas to run out the clock in some 4th quarter blowouts.
Negatives / Downside Will miss Week 1 and perhaps Week 2. Could lose touches to Mike Bell if Bell excels filling in for him. Reggie Bush stealing touches, but Reggie is more of a receiver.
Recommendation Buy at cost

Thomas' injuries improving

Thomas' injuries (ribs, ankle) are improving. He should go into the NFC Championship game near full health. It's not the best match-up vs. the Vikings run defense, but he is usable in Playoff Challenge contests this weekend.
