Depending on the rankings you’re currently looking at, Brees will be ranked either first or, if you’re looking at my list, second. The Saints’ QB has a full array of capable threats both at receiver and out of the backfield and certainly knows how to work them in this system. I would be hard to imagine New Orleans replicating their majestic 2009 season, so anticipate a bit of a drop off in Brees’ numbers across the board. While I have him ranked as the second best QB, there’s no scenario I can think of where I’ll end up with him this year. The pick you’ll have to expend to obtain his services is far too high, considering you can find very similar players (Brady, Romo, Schaub) two to three rounds later.
Positives / Upside He has not missed a game since 2004, when he missed one game. He has tossed 23 300-yard games over the past three years, including ten in 2008. He has topped 4400 yards three years running. 24 in 2005 was his lowest touchdown total since 2003, when he missed five games. He led all quarterbacks in passing yards last season, almost 500 yards more than the second most. He also led the league in attempts, completions, and passing touchdowns (tied with Philip Rivers with 34). He passed for 300-plus yards in ten of his 16 games last season, and tossed multiple touchdowns in eleven. Brees is a consistent player, at a high level, on a team with a prolific offense and shaky defense. What more could you ask for? 5000-35-15
Negatives / Downside The only risk involved when drafting him is the stud running back or wide receiver you’ll miss out on by drafting a quarterback. If you feel confident in backfilling those positions later, then grab Brees early. 4300-25-20 (but not likely).
Recommendation Buy at cost
Draft Position 17
