Could Chris Young save the American medical system from bankruptcy just by getting healthy? No, but it's not as much of an exaggeration as Chris would like. When Young was coming up there were two principal questions about the 6'10 behemoth righty: Could he maintain control? Could he stay healthy?

Answer:No.

Even with his fine strikeout rates historically, no sensible person would even hope for more than the 165-180IP he registered from 2005-2007 and you really wouldn't project him for more than 100IP. In that context, even if everything breaks right for the big righty all you are getting is 160 strikeouts and I gotta tell you even that is a pipe dream. Since the upside is so small, we just can't recommend the heartache. 5-0-4.00-1.30-80. 100IP
Positives / Upside When healthy, Young could be relied upon for 8.5 K/9 (masking his relatively poor control for those who use K:BB to measure such things), but what he did best was suppress hits, giving up only 118 in 173IP in his last "full" season. Young also defies the people who rely on BABIP by consistently suppressing in-play hits having posted four straight seasons of .266 and under (and is a extreme flyball pitcher if you need another nail in the BABIP coffin). You'd best have a back-up plan but it's still the same guy in the same great pitchers park. 10-0-3.50-1.10-160. 175IP
Negatives / Downside You know about the health risk. But in addition his strikeout rate has declined the past three seasons (5.92 last season), his walk rates are up the past five (4.74 in 2009), HR rate? up three straight years. There's a lot to dislike here even if he can keep his arm strapped on. 5-0-4.50-1.40-60-100IP
Recommendation Avoid
Draft Position 260
