The 3.86 ERA is inviting, but little else is with Kawakami. Pitchers have some ability to control strikeouts, walks, and home runs - Kawakami has demonstrated little acumen for controlling any of these factors. He turns 35 in June; the chances he improves greatly are small. Let someone else take on this gamble. 8-0-4.70-1.33-110 in 165 IP

Positives / Upside	As 2009 wore on, Kawakami became a forgotten man of sorts. He recovered nicely from a disastrous start to put up more or less a league average season, then finished with a series of bullpen stints. His 6.0 SO/9 was a solid number to debut at, giving him a foundation to build upon in 2010. After a season of acclimation, he should be able to push deeper into games, boosting his chances at accumulating wins.
Negatives / Downside	It often seemed like Kawakami's success came using smoke and mirrors in 2009. His SO/BB ratio came in at a meager 1.84, he walked more than 3 batters per 9 innings, and he yielded nearly a hit per inning. Plus, he was a bit prone to the long ball. He is heading into dangerous territory with these numbers as they leave him just a few bad breaks away from a collapse in 2010.
