Largely a second baseman in the minors, Hariston posted some terrific OPS numbers, his lowest in a season at triple-A was .940. There was never much question he was not a second baseman, but his inability to produce at the plate in the big leagues has been something of a mystery. He strikes out too much and walks too little, but the same could be said of many reasonable hitters. Hairston is 30 in May and seems unlikely that he will live up the promise of those near 1.000 OPS years.

But that doesn't mean he couldn't be an effective hitter even in the not-so-friendly confines of PetCo park as evidenced by his .299 and .891 OPS (.290/.880 in PetCo) in an injury plagued year as a Padre. Hairston even ran a little bit in San Diego, stealing 8 bases in 56 games before being rented to Oakland. .270-70-20-65-5. 525Abs

Positives / Upside	Hairston appears to be fully healthy for the first time in years and enters the season for the first time in his career without any obvious competition for playing time. .285-75-23-80-12. 550ABs
Negatives / Downside	The 11 steals of 2009 represent the highest that Hairston has ever achieved. The 116 games is also the most he has achieved and the park and lineup is largely unchanged. With Everth Cabrera possibly not leading off against lefties, it's at least possible that Hairston and his .304 OBP may yet again find himself (or his brother) with at least part of the time hitting leadoff where he has no value to anyone. .255-55-17-45-5. 450ABs
