Largely a second baseman in the minors, Hariston posted some terrific OPS numbers, his lowest in a season at triple-A was .940. There was never much question he was not a second baseman, but his inability to produce at the plate in the big leagues has been something of a mystery. He strikes out too much and walks too little, but the same could be said of many reasonable hitters. Hairston is 30 in May and seems unlikely that he will live up the promise of those near 1.000 OPS years. But that doesn't mean he couldn't be an effective hitter even in the not-so-friendly confines of PetCo park as evidenced by his .299 and .891 OPS (.290/.880 in PetCo) in an injury plagued year as a Padre. Hairston even ran a little bit in San Diego, stealing 8 bases in 56 games before being rented to Oakland. .270-70-20-65-5. 525Abs
