MLB - 2010 Fantasy Baseball Pitching Sit/Start Line-up Planner (Week 24)

We tell you who to sit and who to start in setting your pitching line-ups each week. For the top pitchers for the week, we focus on questionable pitchers that may or may not normally start for you that have favorable schedules this week. We won't bother listing pitchers like Lincecum, Halladay, or Carpenter in this article, because you always start them, regardless of schedule. Likewise, we won't list lousy starters in the bottom section, because you'd obviously bench a pitcher Jason Marquis visiting Philadelphia without our having to tell you to do so. For the bottom pitchers, we focus on the average and better than average (but not star) pitchers that you would normally start with poor schedules this week.

Top Two-Start Starts (#1 being the  best)

  1. Daniel Hudson (ARI) -- Tue-@CIN (Wood), Sun-@PIT (Duke) - Continues to be impressive, as he's now 5-1 with a 1.91 ERA since being traded to ARI. Even his only loss was a solid effort (August 17th vs. CIN - 7 IP, 3 ER, 10 K).
  2. R.A. Dickey (NYM) -- Tue-PIT (Duke), Sun-ATL (Lowe) - Continues to be one of the best stories in baseball, and his 10th W of the season showed why he could be in the Mets '11 plans, getting out of a bases loaded jam against the Nationals. He'll be at Citi Field this upcoming week, a place that has been extremely kind to him (6-1, 1.85 ERA).
  3. Gio Gonzalez (OAK) -- Mon-@KC (Bannister), Sun-@MIN (Liriano) - Could arguably be the best pitcher in the AL West right now. Winner of four straight starts, he'll face a KC team he beat earlier in the season and a MIN squad that he's produced a 2.77 ERA and .200 BAA in two starts this season.
  4. Joe Blanton (PHI) -- Mon-@FLA (Miller), Sun-WAS (Maya) -You take away his forgettable start @COL, where he's definitely not the only pitcher to have one of those, has gone 2-0, giving up just 6 ER in the five starts in between. He'll face two teams he hasn't won against this season, but has 13 K in a combined 12 1/3 IP.

Top One-Start Starts (#1 being the best)

  1. Cole Hamels (PHI) -- Tue-@FLA (Mendez) -After losing three straight, has gone 3-0 in his last four starts, giving up just 2 ER in the process. He'll face a Marlins team that he shut out for 7 IP in a winning effort in his last start.
  2. Tommy Hanson (ATL) -- Fri-@NYM (Niese) - Has been solid since getting his first win in nearly two months. However, in his last two starts, is 0-1 while giving up just 4 ER. Has a great chance at earning his 10th win against a team he got his 9th win against.
  3. Hiroki Kuroda (LAD) - Fri-COL (Jimenez)  Like Hamels, should have more than 10 wins. Is 2-1 in last four starts, giving up just 8 ER during that period. He'll take the hill against a COL squad he produced a quality start against in his last start (7 IP, 2 ER, 7 K).
  4. Jhoulys Chacin (COL) -- Sat-@LAD (Padilla) - Has been one of the key factors in the Rockies latest annual late season run. Is 3-0 in his last four starts, giving up just 4 ER in the process. He'll face a Dodgers team that he was impressive against on August 28th (7 IP, 1 ER, 7 K).
  5. Jonathan Sanchez (SF) -- Thu-LAD (Lilly) - After giving up 5 ER in 4 1/3 IP against CIN on August 24th, has only given up 1 ER in his last three starts (1-0 record). He'll take on a LAD team he shut out for 7 IP in a winning effort on September 5th.

Top Set-Up Weeks (#1 being the best)

  1. Joba Chamberlain (NYY) -- (3 @TB, 3 @BAL) - Was having a good September (2-0, Hold 4 K in 3 IP) until he blew a save last Friday against TEX. He should get back on track against his upcoming opponents (combined vs. them this season - 1-0, 2 SV, 3 Holds, 13 K in 11 IP).
  2. Ryan Perry (DET) -- (2 @TEX, 3 @CHW) - Has had an interesting September, which has included a W, L, BS, and SV in five appearances. He'll see a TEX team that he hasn't given up an ER against in two appearances this season and a White Sox squad that he got first and only SV of the season against.
  3. Burke Bladenhop (FLA) -- (3 PHI, 3 CHC) -  Has had a solid week which included earning two victories. He might be called in to face a PHI squad that has struck out five times via Mr. Bladenhop in 4 2/3 IP and a Cubs team that is way under .500 on the road and lost two out of three against FLA earlier in the season.

Bottom Two-Start Starts (#1 being the worst)

  1. Brian Bannister (KC) -- Mon-@OAK (Gonzalez), Sun-CLE (Masterson) - Went to 7-5 on June 23rd. However, that's been the last bright spot of the season, going 0-7 in his last eight starts. He'll face two teams that have combined to give him 3 of his 12 Ls.
  2. Jeff Francis (COL) -- Mon-SD (Luebke), Sun-@LAD (Kershaw) -Its been an up and down season for him, mostly down due to missing about two months of the season. It's also been down due to the two teams he'll take the mound against this upcoming week (combined 0-2 record, 16 ER).
  3. Jon Garland (SD) -- Tue-@COL (Hammel), Sun-@STL (Wainwright) - After a three-start winning streak, is currently on a three-start losing streak. That streak might continue against a COL team that gave him one of those three Ls and a Cardinals squad that plays in a stadium Garland has never won in and will feature a pitcher that defends his home turf pretty well.
  4. Yunesky Maya (WAS) -- Mon-@ATL (Lowe), Sun-@PHI (Blanton) - Had a rocky debut against a Mets team thats offensively challenged. That's not a good sign for this upcoming week, against two teams that actually have an offense and are also tough to beat at home.
  5. Andrew Miller (FLA) -- Mon-PHI (Blanton), Sun-CHC (Silva) - After giving up just 1 ER over 5 IP in a winning effort over ATL on September 3rd, gave up 7 ER over 4 IP in a losing effort to PHI. He'll take a mound against that same PHI team and a CHC squad that's batting over .270 Post All-Star break.

Bottom One-Start Starts (#1 being the worst)

  1. Kevin Correia (SD)  -- Thu-@STL (Westbrook) - Like his staffmate Garland, is on a three-start losing streak after producing a three-start winning streak. Will take a ball against a Cardinals team that play in a stadium he has never won in.
  2. Matt Garza (TB) -- Tue-NYY (Nova) - After giving up just 3 ER on his way to 3-0 in a four-start period, gave up 6 ER over 4 1/3 against a battered Red Sox lineup. He'll go up against a NYY team that he hasn't beaten since '08.
  3. Anibal Sanchez (FLA) -- Fri-CHC (Dempster) - Recovered nicely after his worst start of the season, giving up just 1 ER over 7 2/3 IP in a winning effort against WAS. However, will face a Cubs team that scorched him for 6 ER over 4 IP in his only start against them last season.
  4. Brett Anderson (OAK) -- Fri-@MIN (Blackburn) - After losing two straight, has won two straight starts. Will face a MIN team that gave him a 4.97 ERA in two starts last season.
  5. Ted Lilly (LAD) -- Thu-@SF (Sanchez) - After winning his first five starts as a Dodger, is 0-2 in his last three. Will face a SF team that he hasn't beaten this season and will feature a pitcher that tossed a gem in his last start vs. LAD on September 5th (7 IP, 0 ER, 9 K).

Bottom Set-Up Weeks (#1 being the worst)

  1. Jon Rauch (MIN) --  (3 @CHW, 3 OAK) - After getting 2 Holds and a W, gave up two ER in 1 2/3 IP in an appearance against TEX two weeknds ago. That might carry over as he'll see two teams that have combined to produce 6 ER off of him in 8 1/3 IP this season.
  2. Luke Gregerson (SD) -- (3 @COL, 4 @STL) - After being a monster in that bullpen for months, has become human, already giving up 7 ER in six appearances this month. If he takes the ball this week, he'll see a COL team that has burned him for 5 ER and a BS in six appearances in '10 and a STL squad that features a ballpark he has a career 11.57 ERA in over three appearances.
  3. Craig Breslow (OAK) --  (3 @KC, 3 @MIN) - After giving up ER in consecutive outings, has been spotless with 2 Holds since. He could be non-spotless against  two teams that have combined to score 3 ER over 7 1/3 IP off of him so far in '10.
