Jordan Zimmerman SP WAS ($101 TC drop Edinson Volquez, $5 BW)
Zimmerman's first time out was rough, but he rebounded with a dominating performance giving only a single hit over 6 innings while striking out 9. This being baseball, the Nats lost that game... and won the game where he surrendered five runs and seven hits over four innings.
Barry Enright SP ARI ($60 BW drop Vin Mazzaro)
Another starter, Enright has won his last three starts and now sports a 2.45/1.19 slash (2.18/1.14 since the break). He's an iffy strikeout guy with only 28 in his last 57.2 innings, but this kind of production can help even in shallow mixed formats.
Daric Barton 1B OAK ($50 BW drop Chris Carter, OAK)
Barton has hit .301 since the all-star break and for good measure has added 25 runs in those 42 games. Unless you in an OBP league where his .399 mark does some serious work, that's about the extent of his fantasy contribution.
Jhoulys Chacin SP COL ($29 TC drop Jason Bartlett)
Chacin has been excellent in the past couple of starts since being reinserted into the Rox rotation and draws a two start week at home. However, Chacin is almost two runs worse in Coors than on the road and draws a division-leading Reds squad with Johnny Cueto, then the surprisingly feisty Diamondbacks who have won seven of their last 10. Still, tis the season to be hunting W's, particularly in the Triple Crown league where six(!) of the 12 teams are within two wins of each other, including the top two teams. My intrepid RC squad which has for the moment wrested the lead from Matt Lutovsky's excellent Sporting News squad. Matt is at the bottom of that clump and grabbed Chacin.
Brayan Pena C KAN ($15 drop Jason Kendall)
Jason Kendall will miss the remainder of the season and Pena assumes the tools of ignorance. Pena's major league numbers look pretty awful, .240-something with no power, but he has hit well over .300 at the triple-A level and is still only 28. There's not much help here and he's probably better left for your AL-only compatriots.
Roger Bernadina OF WSN ($5 TC drop Felipe Lopez)
Bernadina has won over a lot of the Nationals organization and tallied 4 home runs and 6 stolen bases in August. He's now playing nearly everyday and doesn't make for a bad power/speed combo in a thin outfield market.
Ryan Hanigan C CIN ($5 BW drop Rick Ankiel)
Hanigan never gets any love. He batted .300 in double-A, then .294 in triple-A, is batting .285 this season with a .381 OBP. He's impossible to strikeout and he's playing more or less regularly for the division leader. He's a good defensive catcher, so why is he going for 1/3 the price of Brayan Pena... in the same league?
Casper Wells OF DET ($5 BW drop Brendan Ryan)
Wells was a 14th round pick in 2005 and just made triple-A this season, batting .233 but slugging 21 home runs in 103 games. As a 23 year-old at single-A he stole 17 bags, getting caught only five times in 50 games which probably doesn't paint an accurate picture of his speed potential, which has been around a 50% success rate for the rest of his professional career. He has struck out on the bad side of once every four at-bats but will take a walk now and again. The prognosis for long term success is not great, but he's gotten off to a fine start, is playing everyday and could ride this for a few weeks.
Travis Snider OF TOR ($1 MW drop Gregor Blanco)
I suppose if you liked Snider before, there's every reason to continue to like him. On the other hand, if you didn't like before (and we didn't) here's another month of evidence on your side. The one thing Snider does consistently is generate strike-outs for opposing pitchers. Since being recalled, Snider has struck out 28 times in 91 at-bats and the number of hitters that do that and succeed is not very large. Plus he's not playing every day.
ALSO
Jenrry Mejia SP NYM - The Mets uber-prospect has come up and as of this writing is not having a splendid outing against the Cubs. Nonetheless, we'd expect some reasonable production for the talented kid if you are in a position to spot his starts... Clay Hensley RP FLA takes over closer duties for the fish. What's more is that he is not a terrible pitcher and thus is well worth a pick... Juan Gutierrez RP ARI had a terrific week and even if it is not "official" he's definitely doing the ninth inning role and the Snakes are playing with some life... Tommy Hunter SP TEX has two starts this week and all he has done is win. No we don't believe in him, but that doesn't mean we aren't taking him for this week anyway, even though he draws the Yankees and Phil Hughes the second start.
