We tell you who to sit and who to start in setting your pitching line-ups each week. For the top pitchers for the week, we focus on questionable pitchers that may or may not normally start for you that have favorable schedules this week. We won't bother listing pitchers like Lincecum, Halladay, or Carpenter in this article, because you always start them, regardless of schedule. Likewise, we won't list lousy starters in the bottom section, because you'd obviously bench a pitcher Jason Marquis visiting Philadelphia without our having to tell you to do so. For the bottom pitchers, we focus on the average and better than average (but not star) pitchers that you would normally start with poor schedules this week.

Top Two-Start Starts (#1 being the best)
- Dan Haren (LAA) -- Mon-CLE (Carrasco), Sun-SEA (Vargas) - After going on a two-start losing streak in which he gave up 11 ER, has gone 1-0 and has given up just 1 ER in his last two. One of those starts was his last start vs. SEA where he blanked them for seven innings. And Cleveland... well it's Cleveland.
- Tommy Hanson (ATL) -- Mon-@PIT (Karstens), Sat-STL (Westbrook) - Got a W which was long overdue in his last start vs. NYM. Has a good chance to stay on the winning track against two teams that will feature pitchers that have a combined 3-11 record Post All-Star break.
- Max Scherzer (DET) -- Mon-CHW (Jackson), Sat-BAL (Matusz) - Continues to stay on a roll, as he's allowed just 3 ER in his four starts, which includes a CG, 1 ER effort against MIN. Against his opponents this upcoming week, has only allowed 6 ER in three combined starts this season.
- Jhoulys Chacin (COL) -- Tue-CIN (Cueto), Sun-ARI (Kennedy) - Has looked good since returing to the rotation last month. Is 2-0, allowing just 2 ER in his last three starts. Blanked ARI for 7 2/3 IP in a winning performance on August 22nd. He'll also face a CIN squad that will feature a pitcher that has had teams from the West give him 3 of his 4 Ls this season.
- Wandy Rodriguez (HOU) -- Mon-@CHC (Dempster), Sat-LAD (Monasterious) - Continues to look strong, with his last two starts being winning efforts against two solid offensive teams (STL, PHI). Is 1-0 in two starts vs. CHC in '10, which will feature a pitcher that had a brutal performance against an offensively-challenged Mets team in his last start. Gave up only 1 ER in a start earlier this season vs. LAD, who will showcase a pitcher that is winless Post All-Star break.
Top One-Start Starts (#1 being the best)
- Cole Hamels (PHI) -- Wed-FLA (Miller) - Is finally getting some Ws, but like in his last start vs. MIL, has had to give up very little from the opposing offense to have a chance. Having the full Phillies lineup back and a FLA team that has batted under .245 Post All-Star break increases the chances at a third straight W.
- Hiroki Kuroda (LAD) -- Fri-@HOU (Happ) - After a two-start winning streak, went back to the usual in his last start, giving up little (3 ER) and suffering the L vs. SF. Will face a HOU team that he defeated on May 18th, one of the rare occasions that saw him get some offensive assistance (gave up 3 ER, team won 7-3).
- Ted Lilly (LAD) - Thu-@HOU (Norris) - Recovered nicely in his last start after his worst start as a Dodger. It's looking promising this week, as he'll start against a HOU team that has only gotten 1 ER off him in two starts in '10.
- Dallas Braden (OAK) -- Tue-SEA (Fister) - After allowing just 9 ER in five starts in August, allowed just 1 ER in his first start of September. Gave up just 1 ER in his last start against SEA, which was a CG victory on August 11th.
- Gio Gonzalez (OAK) -- Wed-SEA (French) - Quietly has 13 wins, with help from a current three-start winning streak. One of those W was against SEA on May 17th (7 IP, 3 ER).
Top Set-Up Weeks (#1 being the best)
- Clay Hensley (FLA) -- (3 @PHI, 3 @WAS) - Enter in the new temporary closer in FLA. The promotion was helped by an impressive August, which saw him go 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA in 14 appearances. Should have some success in his new role this upcoming week, as he's given up just 3 ER and has 20 K in 13 combined appearances against both teams in '10.
- Daniel Bard (BOS) -- (3 TB, 3 @OAK) - Jonathan Papelbon has struggled this season, which has included 7 BS. But this closer-in-waiting hasn't impressed the organization when given that rare opportunity, as he has 6 BS. However, if you take away that stat, he's been solid this season, especially against his upcoming opponents, as he hasn't given up an ER in 11 combined appearances vs. them in '10 (also includes 12 K).
- Joba Chamberlain (NYY) -- (3 BAL, 3 @TEX) - Had a good week last week, which included two Holds and a W. Could have a similar week against two teams he hasn't given up an ER against in seven combined appearances this season (also includes 3 Holds and 2 SV).
Bottom Two-Start Starts (#1 being the worst)
- Aaron Harang (CIN) -- Mon-@COL (Jimenez), Sat-PIT (Morton) - In his return start, had a short but decent outing (4 IP, 1 ER). However, it doesn't look like the results will be decent against a COL team that's starting to get on their annual late season playoff push and a Pirates squad that has produced 5 R and 8 H off of him in an earlier start this season.
- Tommy Hunter (TEX) -- Mon-@TOR (Romero), Sat-NYY (Hughes) - Currently on a three-start winning streak, remains the most impressive starter for the Rangers this season. However, has been far from impressive in his career against TOR and NYY, two teams that he has posted a career ERA over 7.00 against.
- Jeff Niemann (TB) -- Mon-@BOS (Lester), Sun-@TOR (Marcum) - Teams haven't welcomed him back nicely. Since returning from the DL, is 0-2 and has given up 17 ER in two starts since returning from the DL. One of those teams was TOR who scorched him for 7 ER in 5 IP in his last start. He'll also take the mound against a Red Sox team that will feature a pitcher that was dominant against TB in his last start (7 IP, 0 ER, 10 K on August 27th).
- Jason Vargas (SEA) -- Mon-@OAK (Anderson), Sun-@LAA (Haren) - After a three-start winning streak, is now on a three-start losing streak. One of those Ls was against LAA in his last start. His other opponent plays their home games at a ballpark he has never won in.
- Ian Kennedy (ARI) -- Mon-SF (Bumgarner), Sun-@COL (Chacin) - Is 3-0 in his last four starts, only allowing 8 ER in the process. However, is only 1-2 and has allowed 16 ER in six starts combined in '10 against his upcoming opponents.
Bottom One-Start Starts (#1 being the worst)
- Barry Zito (SF) -- Wed-@ARI (Hudson) - With SF trying to chase down SD in the NL West, he hasn't been much help at all. Currently on a five-start losing streak, will face one of the teams that has helped in that (7 ER in 3 2/3 IP on August 28th).
- James Shields (TB) -- Fri-TOR (Cecil) - Teams from the East divisions have given him serious fits this season, as they have produced 7 of his 12 L. One of those Ls was against TOR on August 7th (8 ER (included 6 HR) in 4 IP).
- Colby Lewis (TEX) -- Thu-@TOR (Rzepczynski) - Missing the last two seasons might finally be taking its toll on him, as he's allowed 14 ER in his last two starts. Allowed 5 ER in 5 2/3 IP in a losing effort to TOR on May 16th.
- Daisuke Matsuzaka (BOS) -- Tue-TB (Price) - Has been consistent in his last four starts, which isn't necessarily a good thing, as he's allowed 4 ER in each of his last four starts. That trend has a good chance of continuing against a TB team that has produced 7 ER off of him in two starts this season.
- Jonathan Sanchez (SD) -- Fri-@SD (Richard) - Has looked impressive in last two starts, allowing just 1 ER in 15 IP vs. COL and LAD. He has been impressive against that other team in the division in '10 (9 ER in four starts), but has an 0-3 record to show for it.
Bottom Set-Up Weeks (#1 being the worst)
- Nick Masset (CIN) -- (4 @COL, 3 PIT) - Continues to be a solid force in that Reds bullpen, as he hasn't allowed an ER in a month's span. However, that streak could end this week against a COL team that has the league's best BA at home and a Pirates squad that has produced a 0-2 record with a 11.57 ERA for him in four appearances this season.
- Rafael Betancourt (COL) -- (4 CIN, 3 ARI) - Had a nice week last week, which included a Hold, W and 5 K in 3 1/3 IP. Can be a not so nice week this upcoming week against a CIN team that knows how to bat in the clutch (.268 BA from the seventh inning on - fourth best in MLB) and a D-Backs team that has given him the most trouble in '10 (5 ER in six appearances).
- Jason Frasor (TOR) -- (4 TEX, 3 TB) - 5 of the 7 ER he's given up in the 2nd half has occurred in the last two weeks, with two of those being in a losing effort vs. NYY last Saturday. The struggles have a decent chance of continuing against two teams he's given up a combined 10 ER in 12 appearances in '10.
