NFL - 2010 Fantasy Football 8/30/10 Expert League Draft Analysis

Posted by: RichardSchortemeyerIII

On Monday, August 30, 2010, RotoCommunity.com participated in a fantasy football league with other industry experts, called the Triple Crown Football Standard League. League rules include PPR scoring with 10 starters and 6 reserves (Q-R-R-W-W-W-R/W-T-K-D). Here's how the draft went down round-by-round, with analysis following each round. CLICK HERE to visit the league site. The overall Triple Crown idea is 9 separate leagues, 3 each in baseball, football, and hoops, with 9 league champions, but with the same sites competing in each, we have an overall champion in each sport and overall across the three sports.

MY TEAM

  • QB - J Flacco, M Cassel
  • RB - R Mendenhall, P Thomas, K Moreno, L Washington, S Slaton
  • WR - R Moss, D Bowe, T Owens, M Massaquoi, M Thomas
  • TE - K Winslow, O Daniels
  • K - N Kaeding
  • DST - Steelers

ANALYSIS

Round 1 - Randy Moss - WR - NE - Was really hoping that Gore slipped down. Then my focus shifted to top-tier WR. With Johnson gone, I decided to go with Moss due to this being his FA year and having a healthy Brady to throw to him.

Round 2 - Rashard Mendenhall - RB - PIT - Was either looking to pick him or DeAngelo Williams. Mendenhall was my first choice since he'll be more of the outright #1 in Pittsburgh, compared to a DeAngelo Williams, who's shares carries with Jonathan Stewart. Rushed for a 1,108 yards at an impressive 4.6 yards per rush in his first full season.

Round 3 - Pierre Thomas - RB - NO - He was my top choice in this round. With Mike Bell gone and Reggie Bush not the standard RB-type, Thomas should keep emerging as a solid all-around back. Targeting around 900 rushing yards, 45 catches and 450 receiving yards.

Round 4 - Dwayne Bowe - WR - KC - Missed a few games last season with a leg injury after beginning his career with two solid seasons. KC should have a solid running attack with Jamal Charles, Thomas Jones and Dexter McCluster. Having a quality veteran WR in Chambers on the other side helps.

Round 5 - Knowshon Moreno - RB - DEN - Had a decent rookie season, rushing for nearly 1,000 yards in a crowded backfield. Has been hampered in training camp by a hamstring injury, but returned to practice this week. I look for the offense to be more run-oriented with the loss of top-tier WR Brandon Marshall.

Round 6 - Terrell Owens - WR - CIN - I'm getting my popcorn ready. He's shown on his last three stops that he behaves and puts up big numbers in his first season with them. With the Bengals having an All-Pro on the other side and them drafting a promising threat in the middle, TE Jermaine Gresham, I look for T.O. to continue that trend.

Round 7 - Joe Flacco - QB - BAL - With the emergence of Ray Rice and Willis McGahee, who though is getting older, still found the endzone for 12 rushing TDs last season, Baltimore should remain a run-first team. However, the addition of Pro Bowl WR Anquan Boldin should help bump Flacco over the 4,000-yard mark.

Round 8 - Kellen Winslow - TE - TB - When healthy, he's shown to be one of the best and most athletic threats at his position. With young QBs, their safety net is the TE. That should especially be the case with Freeman who has a young WR core.

Round 9 - Owen Daniels - TE - HOU - I was deciding between him and Vinsanthe Shiancoe. I decided to go with Daniels because he's more proven, knowing I'll get around 60-70 receptions, compared to someone who benefited from an out-of-this-world season from Favre, who I don't expect a similar season from in '10.

Round 10 - Leon Washington - RB - SEA - Looks like it'll be more of a RB-by-committee in Seattle. I focused here more on PPR, as Washington had progressed each season in receptions until a knee injury shortened his '09 campaign.

Round 11 - Steve Slaton - RB - HOU - With the WR position deeper, decided to stick at RB with the same thought process as my previous pick. Had a fantastic all-around rookie season, but a nerve injury and a fumbling problem derailed his sophomore season. Looks like Arian Foster is going to be the top back in the Texans backfield. Slaton will still get a decent amount of touches and be a nice complimentary back, especially in the receptions category. After 50 receptions in '08, had 44 in 11 games last season.

Round 12 - Mohamed Massaquoi - WR - CLE - Decided to go back to WR, especially after a few were taken in front of me. Had a nice under-the-radar rookie season. I expect the Browns to give some more opportunities to their star Joshua Cribbs at WR, but with the team now having a more established passing QB in Delhomme, I expect a solid sophomore season from MM.

Round 13 - Mike Thomas - WR - JAC - Along with Massaquoi, I think he's a nice sleeper WR. Mike Sims-Walker is the #1 WR but not by much. And with a not so deep Jaguars WR group and a good rookie season, I see Thomas improving from 48 catches in '09 to 60-75 this season. He's also one of the top candidates to be the team's majority kick/punt returner.

Round 14 - Pittsburgh Defense - Even without DE Aaron Smith and All-Pro S Troy Polamalu for a majority of the '09 season, they still managed to finish in the top 5 in Yards Allowed Per Game. With them back and arguably the league's best and most athletic LB core, along with a favorable schedule, I look for the Steelers D to return to the level we've been used to seeing over the years.

Round 15 - Matt Cassel - QB - KC - More than likely, I'm using Rivers for 16 of the 17 weeks, so this was primarily to cover Rivers bye week. Looking at Rivers bye week (10) and QB matchups for that week, the best one available was Cassel, who will be facing a Broncos team without a strong pass rushing attack, especially since their top pass rusher, Elvis Dumervil, could miss the entire season. He should have a field day in his short and mid-range pass attempts, and as long as he avoids Mr. Bailey, can find some success down the field.

Round 16 - Nate Kaeding - K - SD - Has developed into one of the best K during the regular season. Has been automatic from short range in the last two years, making all 46 attempts from 0-39 yards the last two seasons. Had his best season with long FGs last season, converting on 9 of 12 from 40+ yards.

MY TEAM

* QB - A. Rodgers
* RB - L. McCoy, S. Greene, R. Williams, L. Maroney
* WR - B. Marshall, P. Garcon, D. Hester, J. Jones, D. Henderson, A. Collie, D. Thomas
* TE - V. Davis, T. Gonzalez
* K - D. Buehler
* DST - Chargers

I've since dropped Collie for J. Edelman and Thomas for the Bears defense.

Round 1 - Rodgers, Aaron QB GB
A quarterback in the first round, really? When the format awards six points per passing touchdown and you are drafting in the late first round, it's a great way to go.

Round 2 - Marshall, Brandon WR MIA
Again, know your scoring system. One point per reception means you want the guy who's caught over 100 passes for three straight seasons.

Round 3 - McCoy, LeSean RB PHI
Do I really think McCoy is a No. 1 fantasy running back? No. Do I think McCoy has a chance at being a fringe No. 1 fantasy running back in a PPR league? Absolutely! I really wanted Jahvid Best in this spot, but he went two picks before me.

Round 4 - Greene, Shonn RB NYJ
While Greene is not a great PPR running back, I'm very high on him this year and would have taken him eariler in a regular format. We are talking about the new low-mileage engine in the league's best running game from a year ago.

Round 5 - Davis, Vernon TE SF
Do I take a mid-level No. 2 wide receiver or an elite tight end? There's a lot of names out there that I still like at wide receiver so I'm going tight end. Davis scored a bunch of times from outside the red zone last year so I expect his touchdown total to be cut in half, which is still really good.

Round 6 - Gonzalez, Tony TE ATL
Did he just take two tight ends in a row? Yes, he did. I love the RB/WR/TE flex. If I'm going to be light at wide receiver, why not play two elite tight ends? For those of you that play with a flex, switch to the three-way flex. I started doing it in my leagues last year and it really opens up your options, particularity on bye weeks.

Round 7 - Garcon, Pierre WR IND
Here's a reason I waited for my No. 2 WR. Garcon is getting no love despite being the best deep ball threat on the Colts offense. He's not a PPR wonder, but that's why I got Marshall (and McCoy and Tony G).

Round 8 - Williams, Ricky RB MIA
Run, Ricky, Run. I love the documentary, I love the player, I love the Dolphins offensive line. But I don't love Ronnie Brown, however, and that's why you should love Ricky, too.

Round 9 - Hester, Devin WR CHI
I like Johnny Knox more, but he's been gone. Hester worked with Isaac Bruce in the offseason, maybe that works out for him. Matt Forte is garbage (I said it!) and can't run in the red zone. The Bears passing game is going to produce more than one fantasy-friendly receiver.

Round 10 - Jones, Jacoby WR HOU
He's become one of the big sleeper picks and one of the guys the causes the room to groan about when they miss out on him.

Round 11 - Maroney, Laurence RB NE
Someone has to run the ball in New England, right? This is really more about depth than anything else.

Round 12 - Henderson, Devery WR NO
Big play guy for a big play offense. A decent bye-week replacement. I was eying the injured Sidney Rice, who was selected a few picks later.

Round 13 - Collie, Austin WR IND
Since I have Garcon, I later dropped Collie for Edelman.

Round 14 - Chargers DST
I took the Bolts ahead of more popular units like the Packers, Ravens and Vikings because of the easy schedule and great special teams. Each of those teams have big issues in their secondary.

Round 15 - Thomas, Demaryius WR DEN
I dropped Thomas in favor of the Bears defense. They have some easy games on their schedule and dangerous return men. Playing matchups with these two overlooked squads should pay off.

Round 16 - Buehler, David K DAL
Can you have a man-crush on a kicker? I took Buehler when there were other more trendy legs available for a few reasons. First, the Cowboys play the most indoor games this season. Second, they only play two consecutive outdoor games all year. Third, Buehler is one of only two kickers to spend all three weeks of the fantasy playoff indoors.

4th pick
written by afeingold, September 07, 2010
QB: Matt Schaub, Ben Roethlisberger
RB: MJD, Brandon Jacobs, Rashad Jennings, Fed Taylor
WR: Miles Austin, Mike Wallace, Donald Driver
TE: Antonio Gates, Jermichael Finley, Greg Olsen
K: Matt Prater
DEF: 49ers

Round 1: Was not thrilled with the fourth overall pick and had a feeling that Ray Rice was going to be selected at three. The pick was between MJD, Gore and Andre Johnson. MJD totaled the third most points for a RB in this format last year (one more point than Andre Johnson). Despite his injury concerns it is hard to pass up a player who logged 312 carries, 53 receptions and 16 total touchdowns last season. He also has missed one game in his career and has a ton of favorable matchups.

Round 2: After every draft it seems like Miles Austin is on every roster of mine. Selecting him over Peyton Manning at the time was a big gamble but it could work out because of the QB depth my team has. Austin, finished as the 6th best WR despite not starting the first four games of the season. Only six points separated him from Reggie Wayne, who went 8th overall and nine points from Randy Moss (7th overall).

Round 3: Knowing that I passed on Peyton it was important to lock up the QB position considering passing touchdowns are six points each. Schaub was one of five QB's to throw at least 29 touchdowns last season. He also led the NFL in passing yards and finished just 14 points behind Peyton Manning.

Round 4: Was looking at Crabtree but decided to change things up and go TE early. In this format, Gates produced like a WR2 (scoring the same amount of points as DeSean Jackson and more than Marques Colston and Ochocinco). He logged a career high 1,157 yards last season and consistently catches 8+ touchdowns per season. As the number 1 target in San Diego now, he could approach career highs in receptions. Through the first four rounds on paper the team has a top 5 fantasy qb, rb, wr and te.

Round 5: When Hakeem Nicks was selected it allowed me to explore the idea of drafting another elite tight end to start the at flex spot. Like most people I have bought into the hype of Finley and expect him to have a breakout season. He finished last season strong and has looked exceptional during the preseason. In a previous draft I did the same thing drafting back-to-back tight ends which could create mismatches in some weeks for opposing teams.

Round 6: I should have drafted a second running back here but instead got lured into the upside of Mike Wallace. As a rookie he led the NFL with a 19.4 yards per catch and is poised for a big season with Santonio Holmes no longer on the team.

Round 7: After missing out on Harrison and LT, i opted to lock up my WR corps and go with PPR machine Donald Driver. Driver is one my safer picks and every year finishes with 70 catches, 1,000 yards and five+ touchdowns. Despite his age and injury concerns he finished as the 19th best WR.

Round 8: Here is where waiting on a RB really comes back to haunt you. I picked the wrong RB in Brandon Jacobs and should have went with Forsett. The Giants plan to feature Bradshaw as the starting back which, could limit the touches of Jacobs. Forsett has much more upside and better suited in a PPR format.

Round 9: I really this pick if Hightower can repeat last seasons production. He finished as the 15th highest scoring RB due to finishing second in the NFL with 63 receptions amongst RB's. He also rushed for 598 yards and scored eight times.

Round 10: With Jacoby Jones and Mike Williams off the board I went with Devin Aromashodu. I like his upside in the Bears offense and provides depth as my fourth wide receiver.

Round 11: Big Ben is someone I am targeting in ally my drafts as a backup. He is suspended the first four games but has the upside as a top-10 fantasy QB. I will start him Week 7 against the Dolphins when Schaub has a bye.

Round 12: In case MJD misses any team I had to take his handcuff in Rashad Jennings.

Round 13: 49ers defense finished with the fourth most points last season and should thrive again this year in the NFC West.

Round 14: Yes I am carrying three tight ends. People are very mixed with Olsen in the Bears offense but if he explodes I have the luxury of shopping Finley.

Round 15: LJ...already dropped for RB Fred Taylor

Round 16: Matt Prater is an accurate underrated kicker who was one of four kickers to make at least 30 field goals last season.
