Brown, Jordan OF CLE ($100 TC, - drop Sizemore, Grady OF CLE and $80 U, - drop Carp, Mike 1B SEA)
With Grady Sizemore down for the season, the Indians appear to be turning to Brown to fill the void in center field. The 26-year-old was hitting .308 at Triple-A Columbus at the time of his recall, and posted an impressive .335 average in Columbus in 2009. However, the truth is Brown has limited power and speed, and he is likely to post a solid average at best while meddling in a mediocre Indians line-up. Brown is likely to see a lot of at bats moving forward, making him worth an add in AL-only leagues, but don’t expect huge production out of Brown.
Gomez, Jeanmar SP CLE ($55 TC, - drop Robertson, Nate SP NYY and $20 U, - drop Nava, Daniel OF BOS)
Despite the fact that he was having his worst professional season at Triple-A Columbus in 2010, Gomez has come up and made an immediate impact in his first four big league starts. He holds an ERA of just 1.54, a WHIP of 1.07, and 12 Ks in 23.1 innings. Gomez is just 22, so expect some bumps in the road over the final month and a half of the season, but there is no reason to think that Gomez will not be a reliable resource down the stretch. Gomez makes a nice add for your squad, and he is certainly someone to grab in keeper leagues or to keep in mind for 2011.
Kalish, Ryan OF BOS ($55 TC, - drop Westbrook, Jake SP STL)
All the injuries the Red Sox are facing lead to an opportunity for 22-year-old Ryan Kalish to play everyday in the Red Sox outfield. He certainly has made the most of his opportunity. In 40 at bats he is hitting .300 with 6 runs, a homerun, 4 RBI, and a stolen base. Kalish has flashed a nice power/speed combo as evidenced by his 13 HRs and 24 stolen bases in just 293 at bats in the minors this season. When, excuse me, if the Red Sox ever get healthy, there is a chance that Kalish will head back to the minors, but for now he makes for a nice AL-option and someone to keep an eye on moving forward.
Bergesen, Brad SP BAL ($55 TC, - drop Tatum, Craig C BAL)
24-year-old Brad Bergesen has spent most of the 2010 season on the waiver wire, and with good reason. His 5.83 ERA and 1.53 WHIP are the type of stats that destroy a fantasy pitching staff. However, in his last three starts Bergesen has gone 23 innings and allowed just 9 hits and 4 runs like striking out 14. After a very good rookie season in 2009, expectations were high for Bergesen in 2010, and it appears that Bergesen is finally on the right track. Under the new leadership of Buck Showalter, the Orioles are playing much better baseball, and Bergesen is another guy to take a look at over the final month and a half of the season, and someone to consider a big sleeper for 2011.
ALSO
Josh Wilson SS SEA was picked up in favor of teammate Jack Wilson. Josh has received more at bats lately, but neither is a strong option… A handful of starting pitchers were added to fill holes in various team’s fantasy staffs. Luke French SEA, Dustin Moseley NYY, Doug Fister SEA, and Trevor Bell ANA all could be added in a pinch, but I like Moseley for the short term, and Fister through the end of the season the most… RP Koji Uehara was added in both leagues. He has been the best reliever in the O’s pen, and could see save opportunities under new manager Buck Showalter… SS Jed Lowrie BOS was a free agent in Ultimate and makes for a nice low end add at SS or MI if he is available in your league.
