Drew Storen RP WSN ($100 MW drop Jon Rauch RP MIN)

Out with the old and in with the new.  Storen is said to be splitting the closer time with Tyler Clippard and host of others for the Nationals with the departure of Matt Capps. He's not an "A" closer (it is the Nats after all) but he's still a must pick for his quality.

Kevin Gregg RP TOR ($100 TC drop J.A. Happ SP HOU)

This move might have been placed prior to Happ going out Friday evening and pitching six innings of two hit shut-out ball.  With trade talks focusing on teammate Scott Downs (who along with Jason Frasor back up the sometimes shaky Jays finisher), Gregg looks reasonably certain to hold the job. Gregg was something of a surprise drop the previous week as closers usually can draw something on the trade market this time of year even if your team doesn't need them.

Kenley Jansen RP LAD ($76 MW)

We love Kenley. The big converted catcher simply blew away minor league competition in this, his first really full season of pitching. He got a save filling in for Johnathan Broxton who has missed bits and pieces of time recently. $76 is probably a bit over-enthusiastic since Joe Torre is unlikely to entrust the closer gig to Kenley on a long term basis rather than Hong-Shih Kuo. He's a great long term pick-up and not a terrible speculation pick here.

Craig Breslow RP OAK ($55 BW drop Orlando Hudson)

Breslow may split the closing duties with Michael Wuertz during Andrew Bailey's absence. Breslow is the better pitcher, but Wuertz has been asked to close by the team before (and indeed got the first opportunity here). In any case, Bailey is said to be back on Friday or Saturday, so unless his back flares up, this is probably a short term solution.

Rich Harden SP TEX ($50 MW, $1 TC drop Jeff Francoeur)

Harden will start Saturday with Scott Feldman moving to the bullpen. Whether Harden's will stay healthy is anyone's guess but the upside there is too good to ignore.  No point worrying about this now - his price will be dictated by how well he performs today against the Angels. Francoeur will get some playing time this week in the absence of Jason Bay (out with a concussion), but "laser show" hasn't materialized at the plate in some time.

Alex Gordon 3B/OF KAN ($46 MW drop Jhonny Peralta 3B/SS DET)

Gordon is getting another chance (for the moment). Although Peralta is unlikely to keep the energy he displayed on Friday with two home runs, Gordon is still only an incremental improvement at best.

Jack Cust OF OAK ($37 MW, $2 TC drop Franklin Gutierrez)

Greg Marta of Fantasypros911.com did two things I really like here. First is recognizing Cust has been a different kind of batter for about six weeks. Batting .300 in both June and July. Cust hasn't had a .300 month since 2007, and I am not sure he has ever had consecutive .300 months.  Secondly he's looked at his standings and has seen that with a 16 steal lead, but a lot of points on the line in home runs, runs and RBI Gutierrez (40 runs in 99 games vs. Custs 30 in 55) is pointless. We like the fact that Marta (who owns Pierre, Chris Young, Jose Reyes and others) sees that six or seven stolen bases Gutierrez might nab are useless to him.

Chris Johnson 3B HOU ($32 MW, $1 TC drop Sean Rodriguez)

It's a rule in the TC leagues that Sean Rodriguez be picked up or dropped each week... or so it seems.  Chis Johnson's minor league numbers (age 25, .744 career minor league OPS and a lot of that in the hitters parks of Corpus Chrsti and Round Rock) don't suggest his current level of performance, but he's playing, and the energy is there. We'd recommend a quick trigger.

Brett Wallace 1B HOU ($23 BW, $1 TC drop Reid Brignac)

Wallace inspires religious feelings in many people. But he's also been in three organizations in the past year or so. He hasn't cracked a .900 OPS since the Midwest league and is currently putting up a .868 in Las Vegas (where you or I could hit .300). He's averaged fewer than 20 home runs per 500 at-bats and doesn't run at all. He's a first basemen now because he really couldn't play 3rd.  None of which is to say he won't be a reasonably effective major league hitter, but he looks suspiciously un-star-like to this writer. Add to this that he looks like he is headed for Round Rock and not Houston. **UPDATE** With the trade of Lance Berkman, the Astros have announced that Wallace will be with the big club, but he's still a low end corner for mixed leagues. You do not have a path that is altogether strewn with rose petals. Keeper league? NL only? Sure. We'd avoid him for mixed.

Chris Snyder C PIT ($22 MW drop Nick Hundley)

Snyder moved to the Pirates where presumably he will stay in the lineup even when Ryan Doumit returns (with Doumit getting time at 1st or in the outfield). He'll likely bring more or less the same package he did with the Diamondbacks which is good power and a low batting average. He should be a functional cacther 2 unless the BA will kill you.

Coco Crisp OF OAK ($22 TC drop Jonathan Lucroy C MIL)

Crisp has, despite something of a timeshare, stolen 10 bases in July and eight since the break. Enough said?

Michael Wuertz RP OAK ($20 TC drop J.J. Putz $3 BW)

Putz must've been a hard drop with his stellar work and Bobby Jenks' job situation, but Wuertz is likely the temporary saves guy in Oakland (possibly splitting with Craig Breslow) and is useful in much the same way as Putz otherwise. Wuertz will be a popular pick-up this week, but the A's are saying that incumbent closer Andrew Bailey will be back August 6 (his DL was retroactive to July 21st), so modest bids please.

Randy Wells SP CHC ($15 TC drop Erik Bedard SP SEA)

There's probably not a lot of reason to wait for Bedard at this point as you would pretty much have to assume that even were he to come back he would just get hurt again. Wells, in cased you missed it, is looking again like the guy who was so helpful at the beginning of 2009. 1.79/1.17 and 34 K's in 40.1 IP in his last six starts dating back to the end of June.

Vin Mazzaro SP OAK ($10 BW drop Brian Bannister)

Mazzaro's last start was ugly, 12 hits in 5.1 innings, but prior to that he had strung together six quality starts and eight of the last nine. He's a innings filler in mixed, but viable in AL-only.

Alexi Casilla 2B/SS MIN ($7 BW)

The diminutive speedster will get a run with Orlando Hudson on the DL. He is genuinely speedy and well worth a look in leagues where the speed aisle has been gone over.

J.P. Arenciba C TOR ($6 BW drop Scott Hairston)

Arenciba just knocked his 30th home run in triple-A.  On Friday night, the Jason Buck started popping up in trade rumors with the Detroit Tigers. Buck probably would not pass through waivers so we may know by now if such a deal might happen. Arenciba is probably ready to go and has serious power.

Vicente Padilla SP LAD ($5 TC drop Chad Qualls)

Qualls is reported Saturday AM to be a Tampa Ray, eliminating his fantasy value as he will be several steps away from the feature role. Padilla has his season slash down to 3.47/1.03 with a gaudy 1.42/0.85 in July with 66 K's in 72.2 innings for the season. We don't think it the Eephus. We're skeptical about his maintaining this, but ride it while he is. What he is doing this year is what he did last season, so now it is a trend.

Seth Smith OF COL ($3 TC drop Justin Smoak)

Smith platoons, which is normally the kiss of death for fantasy numbers, but his season totals are now up to .287 40-14-45 with a couple of steals. The lefty hitting Smith has hefty splits against righties and at home. It makes him an obvious choice for daily leagues and as we say, those totals are usable even if he isn't playing every day. As for Smoak, please, triple-A. He's a very valuable property, let's teach him the game instead of throwing him to the wolves.

Jeremie Guthrie SP BAL ($1 MW drop Jayson Nix)

Guthrie has been excellent of late with a 1.31/1.12 in his three appearances since the all-star break. Sadly, he has done enough that although the hapless Orioles (or is it only the Phillies that are now Happ-less?) are now hearing offers for the rejuventaed Guthrie, they now wish to keep him.

Jon Garland SP SDG ($1 MW drop Corey Patterson)

Garland has been pretty good for the Friars, sporting a 3.56 ERA and acutally striking out 82 in 126.1 innings. Garland has always generated a lot of decisions and has 16 decisions over 21 starts this season, which means he doesn;t have to have a great winning percentage to give you W's.

Asdrubal Cabrera SS/2B CLE ($1 MW drop none)

Cabrera is back has yet to get it back in gear and the Cleveland offense leaves much to be desired. But Cabrera has a track record of producing good batting averages and should be a reasonable source for runs and bonus steals from the middle infield. I am not sure who one would displace for him in a mixed league however.

Domonic Brown OF PHI ($1 TC drop Ben Sheets SP MIL)

Jayson Werth would never get through waivers (he's both cheap and would garner two top picks if a team did not re-sign him after the season), so if he is not traded in the next few hours, he will stay a Philly and Brown will likely head back to the lovely Lehigh Valley. But for the moment he is up and producing. A must in all keepers leagues, Domonic Brown didn't win an OF job in spring strictly because they had too many contracts.
