Betemit, Wilson 3B KC ($90 U, - drop Blalock, Hank 1B TB)

With Alberto Callaspo out of the picture, Wilson Betemit tops this weeks waiver wire adds. The Callaspo trades leaves Betemit as the everyday starter at third for the Royals, and where there are at bats, there is value in AL-only leagues. Betemit is unlikely to be the Royals long term answer at third base, but he is a professional hitter who has had success at the big league level in the past. Betemit is hitting .385 in 65 at bats this season, and while he clearly won’t be able to maintain that kind of production, he is a great grab in AL-only leagues.

Sizemore, Scott 2B DET ($51 TC, - drop Bell, Josh 3B BAL)

Sizemore was on nearly every expert’s sleeper list coming into the season, but after struggling at the plate he lost the Tigers starting second base job and was shipped to the minors in mid-May. At Triple-A Toledo Sizemore got back to his productive ways by hitting .329 with 6 homeruns in 167 at bats. Sizemore will fill in for the injured Brandon Inge at the hot corner for at least the next month, and there is enough upside in his bat for him to run away with a starting job for the rest of the season. He is well worth an add in AL-only leagues, but keep in mind that he is coming off an injury of his own and may not play everyday initially.

Davies, Kyle SP KC ($33 KC, - drop Bedard, Erik SP SEA)

Davies has picked up three consecutive quality starts and collected 13 strikeouts along the way. He is pitching better now than he has at any point during the season, but still holds a 5.45 ERA, a 1.51 WHIP, a K/BB ratio of 65/45. If you are in need of an innings eater and are convinced that Davies will continue to maintain the moderate production he has produced lately, than feel free to roll the dice on him. However, he is likely best avoided if you have other options.

ALSO

It was a slow week building up to the trade deadline. Expect a lot of action next week and the following week when trades lead to a wealth of comings and goings within the AL…Jesse Crain RP MIN was picked up after being called upon to clean up closer Jon Rauch’s mess last Friday, but Rauch still has a strong hold on the closer’s role…Craig Tatum C BAL was picked up to fill the spot Matt Wieters left when he was placed on the DL.  Tatum has short term AL-only value while Wieters remains on the shelf…David Pauley SP SEA was grabbed after making a second straight solid start for the Mariners.  If he isn’t already owned, he is worth grabbing as a low end option…Former top prospect Dan Johnson 1B TB was an interesting pick-up. He has been mashing at Triple-A, but a call up doesn’t seem imminent.  He could be a great pick-up if he does get the call.
