Rzepczynski, Marc SP TOR ($150 U, - drop Huff, David SP CLE)
You know it’s a slow week if Marc Rzepcysnski (from here forward referred to as Marc R.) is the highlight of the waiver wire. Marc R. broke his finger in spring training and is just now returning to his spot in the Blue Jays rotation. Marc R. had a poor first start, but the lefty was surprisingly effective last season when he a 3.66 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. You certainly could do worse than Marc R. in AL-only keeper league in terms of low end starters, but I wouldn’t expect him to be as effective as he was in 2009.
Brantley, Michael OF CLE ($100 U, - drop Hernandez, David SP BAL)
With Shin-Soo Choo in the DL, Brantley has been recalled and is in line for a ton of playing time in the Indians outfield. If he available in your league, he is certainly worth a pick up despite the fact that he hasn’t hit a lick. The lowly Indians lose nothing by running out the 24-year old everyday, so he is unlikely to lose playing time and eventually should turns things around. Once he does, his base stealing ability, he stole 46 in just 116 games last season, makes him an intriguing option for AL-only leagues.
Nix, Jayson 2B CLE ($70 U, - drop Frandsen, Kevin 2B ANA)
Where the heck did that come from? Nix hit six home runs last week despite the fact that he still was available in plenty of AL-only leagues. Clearly you wish you had picked Nix up last week if he is sitting on your waiver wire, but he still well worth a pick-up this week. His incredible week has clearly established him as the clear cut starter at second for the Indians, meaning plenty of at bats are coming Nix’s way. Heck, maybe he’ll stay
Betemit, Wilson 3B KC ($13 TC, - drop Bulger, Jason RP ANA)
Betemit suddenly finds himself playing just about everyday for the Royals. An injury to Alberto Callaspo opened up the door for Betemit who performed well enough to earn further at bats. However, it seems unlikely that Betemit will continue to find his way into the line-up. Callaspo is back, and the Royals are unlikely to sit Jose Guillen to give Betemit at bats as the DH. He is a low end corner infield option for AL-only leagues.
ALSO
Don’t forget about Bengie Molina C TEX if he wasn’t eligible to be picked up until this week… Eric Patterson OF BOS will continue to get at bats for the Red Sox due to their injury woes, and is worth owning… Bruce Chen SP KC, Ryan Rowland-Smith SP SEA, and Anthony Lerew SP KC were all snagged, but all three are nothing more than low end options if you need a starter… Mike Pineda SP SEA was an interesting pick-up. Some though the Mariners would summon him to fill Cliff Lee’s spot in the rotation, but they decided to go with David Pauley. However, it is likely only a matter of time before Pineda gets his shot. He is a good prospect, and could have an impact during the second half of the season.
