OFF-SEASON TRANSACTIONS

KEY ADDS

  • Campbell, Jason (WAS)

KEY SUBTRACTIONS

  • Fargas, Justin RB (FA)
  • Russell, JaMarcus QB (FA)

NOTE: Campbell made solid strides last year, and his big arm could be a nice match for Oakland's speedy wideouts. Fargas' departure turns the three-headed RB monster into a two-headed beast, while Russell looks to be headed into irrelevance -- or worse.

THE BIG QUESTION

Will Darren McFadden fulfill his potential as an NFL feature back, or will he be Bush-whacked on the way to stardom?

McFadden arrived in the NFL with an enormous amount of hype, but his career has been riddled with nagging injuries and outright under-performance. As he begins his third season, McFadden must step up and show the form that made him the fourth overall pick in the 2008 draft, or he could find himself watching burly Michael Bush rumble over opposing defenses. D-Mac is still an excellent receiver, but he must beat the injury big if he hopes to be a fantasy-relevant back in 2010.

ALSO

New quarterback Jason Campbell has a fine stable of speedsters at his disposal, but most of those fliers are not good route runners and/or possess suspect hands. It's also far from clear as to which of this group will step forward and assume the role of downfield playmaker on a Raiders team in desperate need of offensive punch. Darrius Heyward-Bey may be the most talented, but Louis Murphy is perhaps the most polished. If you're a gambler, Chaz Schilens presents the most upside -- but his checkered injury history should give you cause for draft-day pause.

FANTASY DEPTH CHART

QB

  • Campbell, Jason
  • Gradkowski, Bruce
  • Boller, Kyle

RB

  • McFadden, Darren
  • Bush, Michael
  • Bennett, Michael

 WR

  • Heyward-Bey, Darrius
  • Schilens, Chaz
  • Murphy, Louis
  • Higgins, Johnnie Lee

 TE

  • Miller, Zach
  • Stewart, Tony

NOTE: Campbell and tight end Zach Miller are the only starters whose roles are set in stone. The RB rotation will be closely watched this preseason, as will the distribution of passes to the wideouts. The safest bet here is Miller, whose 805 receiving yards led the team a season ago. I like Schilens a great deal, and tabbed him a sleeper in this year's Fantasy Football Guide. PK Sebastian Janikowski knocked home 26 field goals but just 17 extra-points last year, and he's not worth drafting unless the Raiders offense picks up its game significantly. No one distinguished himself as a return man last season, meaning an open competition could be in the offing -- which could open the door for rookie speedster Jacoby Ford to show his stuff.
