OFF-SEASON TRANSACTIONS

KEY ADDS

  • Westbrook, Brian (PHI)
  • Ginn, Ted (MIA)
  • Dixon, Anthony (rookie)
  • David, Anthony (rookie)
  • Iupati, Mike (rookie)
  • David Carr (NYG)

KEY SUBTRACTIONS

  • Glen Coffee (retired)

NOTE: With Coffee announcing his surprise retirement, Anthony Dixon and Brian Westbrook should split the back-up role behind Frank Gore.

The Rookie offensive lineman could prove to be the best pickups of the off-season if they can find a way give that line some push off the ball. With a running game that can control the pace of the game, San Fran could take the next step this season.

THE BIG QUESTION

Despite all the talent, can this group mature into a offensive unit that can consistently post points from week to week?

The 49ers made some huge strides last season once Alex Smith took the reigns and started letting the ball fly. With All-Pro Vernon Davis manning the inside, and future All-Pro Michael Crabtree on the outside, Smith has a slew of options to choose from. Both Davis and Crabtree will definitely be starters on any fantasy team this season and Smith will make a nice back-up who has starter's upside. With the improved O-line, Gore will finally have the running lanes he's been craving for years now. He's primed to take the next step onto a truly elite fantasy back -- all he needs to do now is stay healthy. Maturity is the hardest thing gauge from season to season, but it's the only thing standing in the way between these players and fantasy stardom.

ALSO

Acquired for a 5th round pick around the draft, Ted Ginn should fit into this system quite well. He was forced into acting as the Dolphins number one receiver since being drafted, but his true role in the NFL is a slot receiver/returner, which he'll get the chance to be in the Bay Area. With all the play makers on offense, Ginn will go relatively unnoticed by opposing defenses and get a chance to see some favorable coverage each time he's on the field. While he'll have no consistency, Ginn should provide three or four huge games during the season and that should never go overlooked.

If you're searching for a receiver in a deeper PPR league, Josh Morgan will be used to move the chains but won't provide much in the way of yardage.

FANTASY DEPTH CHART

QB

  • Smith, Alex
  • Carr, David
  • Davis, Nate

RB

  • Gore, Frank
  • Westbrook, Brian
  • Dixon, Anthony
  • Robinson, Michael

 WR

  • Crabtree, Michael
  • Morgan, Josh
  • Ginn, Ted
  • Hill, Jason

 TE

  • Davis, Vernon
  • Walker, Delaine

NOTE: A shrewd signing of David Carr in the off-season will prevent little drop off at QB should anything happen to Smith. Also a former number one overall pick, Carr has shown some life when called upon the last few seasons. There's no guarantee that Morgan will win the number two WR job, but he definitely has the inside track. Westbrook and Dixon should split time as Gore's back up. Michael Robinson is still lingering and has experience, but he shouldn't be a factor. After showing off his punishing running style at Mississippi State, Dixon fits the mold of a Mike Singletary smash mouth running back and should complement Gore and Westbrook well.

Despite picking up rookie PK Shane Andrus in the off-season, this is still Joe Nedney's kicking job to lose. Nedney is a decent option every year, but you can certainly do better at the position.

The 49ers' defense showed off their play making abilities last season and I see no reason why they can't continue to be a top tier defense. Make them one of the first units off the board.
