OFF-SEASON TRANSACTIONS

KEY ADDS

  • Tebow, Tim
  • Fargas, Justin (OAK)
  • Decker, Eric
  • Thomas, Demaryious

KEY SUBTRACTIONS

  • Marshall, Brandon (MIA)
  • Scheffler, Tony (DET)

NOTE: There was no one in the draft or in free agency that can replace the production of the dearly departed Brandon Marshall. To compensate, the Broncos drafted both Dearyious Thomas and Eric Decker to try and fill the void.

Fans will definitely be heard in their support of Tim Tebow as the season goes along, but it's doubtful that he'll take the majority of snaps at any point this year.

Fargas was brought in after injuries to both Moreno and Buckhalter early in training camp. He won't see significant touches unless those injuries linger with the others.

THE BIG QUESTION

How is this team going to score points?

Frankly, I have no idea. Kyle Orton is a below average quarterback, and definitely one that isn't going to win games on his arm. He's a game manager at best. Some of his flaws were negated by Marshall's raw talent, but he no longer has that luxury.

Denver's only real strength will be on the ground. And 'strength' is being awfully generous. 2009 first rounder Knowshawn Moreno wasn't anything special in his rookie season and will have to take some pretty big strides in year two to live up to his lofty draft position. Buckhalter is definitely the back up, but that doesn't mean he won't see his touches. He'll get about 40% of the touches per game and is actually more own-able because you can pick him up near the end of drafts. Unfortunately, the passing game is so putrid that defenses will be able to pile extra men in the box to shut them down.

ALSO

Through the air, Eddie Royal is going to have to rebound in a big way to make any sort of impact this season. After suffering from a sophomore slump, Royal will be relied upon to lead this unit and get the majority of targets. While it can be a disaster owning receivers in bad offenses, Royal is in a pretty good situation and has the most talent among the veterans. Could be a nice post-hype sleeper in the waiting.

With Tony Scheffler now in Detriot, Daniel Graham will get full playing time at TE. Despite the added reps, he's still nothing more than a bye week replacement.

FANTASY DEPTH CHART

QB

  • Orton, Kyle
  • Quinn, Brady
  • Tebow, Tim

RB

  • Moreno, Knowshawn
  • Buckhalter, Correll
  • Fargas, Justin

 WR

  • Royal, Eddie
  • Gaffney, Jabar
  • Lloyd, Brandon
  • Stokley, Brandon
  • Decker, Eric
  • Thomas, Demaryious

 TE

  • Graham, Daniel
  • Quinn, Richard

NOTE: Outside of Moreno Royal, and Buckhalter, no one really has won a job yet in this offense. Orton is the likely opening day starter, but Quinn will get his shake along the way. Denver valued Quinn enough in the off-season to trade some picks to Cleveland for the former Notre Dame grad. But no matter how you shake it, neither is a quality option.

This receiving corps is a pretty big mess. Royal will start the year as the number one, but the rest of jobs are wide open. Lloyd has been a tease for years now and should make the roster. His inconsistency has left me disenfranchised towards him for fantasy purposes. Fight the urge to pick him up if he has a huge week early. Coach Josh McDaniels' familiarity with Gaffney should assure him a spot and some reps, but he too is wildly inconsistent. Rookies Eric Decker and Demaryious Thomas will likely start the year watching form the sidelines. Thomas may have been the first round pick, but Decker is a more polished product and has a better chance to make some sort of contribution this season.

Matt Prater is back for another year. If your league has increased bonus points for long field goals, Prater is an excellent option. He's been blessed with a big leg and afforded the chance to kick in the thin air of the Mile High City for eight games a year. The only reservation I have is that Denver's offense may not generate the bulk of FG chances to make him overly valuable.

Although it may look tempting to play the match ups with the Broncos' defense against the softies that reside in the AFC West... Stop, take a deep breath and talk yourself out of it. They're not up to snuff.
