OFF-SEASON TRANSACTIONS

KEY ADDS

  • Jones, Thomas (NYJ)
  • McCluster, Dexter

KEY SUBTRACTIONS

Ryan, Sean

NOTE: The Chiefs' goal to perpetually aggravate fantasy players everywhere has been taken to a new level. After giving us the tease of Jamaal Charles over 2009's second half, they went out and acquired a workhorse back in Thomas Jones. Both should have value, but Charles by himself would have been a monster... McCluster has been brought in to play a Wes Welker-type role in new OC Charlie Weis' offense. Make sure to pick him in the later rounds of any PPR draft -- he could grab 80 catches this year.

THE BIG QUESTION

With a surprising amount of playmakers, can they shock the world and be a top 15 offense?

I see no reason why they can't. With another year to build experience, Matt Cassel should improve on his rather mediocre 2009. While I can't recommend him as a fantasy starter, don't convince yourself that he's any more than a back up with upside. Cassel's ability to run the ball always goes overlooked when evaluating his fantasy value, but again, he's a better back up to start the season.

The ubertalented Dwayne Bowe is coming off a down season which saw him deal with injuries and hustle issues. He's said in the off-season that he's re-committed to football... and who am I to call him a liar? I think he's currently going a bit too late in drafts and presents a very nice value to all drafters. Another factor in elevating Bowe's status is the threat of Chris Chambers on the other side of the field. Claimed off waivers from San Diego around mid-season, Chambers was a perfect match for this offense and was a top 20 fantasy WR over the season's final seven weeks. He's basically an afterthought in drafts thus far. His current ADP is 64th among WR. While I don't think I can endorse him too highly in PPR leagues, Chambers' big play ability make him a nice fit in any standard league. He's a WR3 at a waiver wire price.

ALSO

Despite battling for touches, both Jones and Charles retain decent fantasy value. Take Charles over Jones in every format, but upgrade Charles in PPR leagues -- he's a catching machine.

FANTASY DEPTH CHART

QB

  • Cassel, Matt
  • Croyle, Brodie
  • Gutierrez, Matt

RB

  • Charles, Jamaal
  • Jones, Thomas
  • Moore, Kestahn

 WR

  • Bowe, Dwayne
  • Chambers, Chris
  • McCluster, Dexter
  • Urban, Jerheme
  • Copper, Terrance

 TE

  • Pope, Leonard
  • Moeaki, Tony

NOTE: Expect McCluster to work out of the slot and emerge as the team's number three receiver. He also may poach some carries on reverses -- he was a college RB. He's basically in the Percy Harvin mold... Todd Haley has brought in his former Cardinals TE Leonard Pope to take over starting duties. Pope is primarily a blocking TE but could factor in the passing game a little. He's not draftable, but definitely worth keeping an eye on to see if he gets some extra looks... Ryan Succop is back as the place kicker and is a fine option. Definitely start him for his games against the AFC West... The Chiefs' biggest weakness is their defense. They'll be your fantasy team's biggest weakness if you make the disastrous decision to draft them.
