OFF-SEASON TRANSACTIONS

KEY ADDS

  • Taylor, Chester (MIN)
  • Manumaleuna, Brandon (SD)

KEY SUBTRACTIONS

  • Peterson, Adrian (FA)

NOTE: Switching backup change-of-pace RBs should not have too big an impact.  Adding the TE whose career is usually cited as the evidence that Mike Martz doesn't like TEs is also not fantasy-relevant.

THE BIG QUESTION

Martz + Cutler = ?

It may be time to take a skeptical look back at Mike Martz the Offensive Coordinator. The common assumption is that Martz "turned around" the St. Louis Rams offense in his first year as OC in 1999, and made the Lions reasonable in 2006, before a personality clash with Mike Singletary ran him out of San Francisco prematurely in 2008. In addition to Martz, new arrivals to the 1999 Rams also included Marshall Faulk, Kurt Warner, and Torry Holt. For players who had a track record coming into 1999, the stats show Isaac Bruce and Marshall Faulk were about as good on a per-game yardage average as they had been for several years prior while Az Hakim and Ricky Proehl basically traded season totals from 1998 to 1999. The 2006 Lions make a better case for Martz the Coordinator, as Roy Williams and Mike Furrey had career years when he came to town. The upgrade in QB (Jon Kitna over the remnants of Joey Harrington) probably weighed heavier than the scheme in the success. Detroit fans might be able to tell you that the offensive line started its fall off the rails in 2006 as well, though, mitigating the improvement and hastening the end of Kitna's days as a starter. San Francisco, similarly, went from awful to just very bad in Martz's short time in town. The point of this is, don't expect Bears WRs to work miracles in 2010, just because the coordinator used to run elbows with some hall-of-fame caliber WRs. Martz has an identifiable system and has had success in the NFL, but needs talent to make it stick. Unlike the 1999 Rams, this time the turnaround will have to come with the QB, starting RB, 5 WRs, and 2 TEs the team had last year.

Chicagoans used to 3 yards and a cloud of dust from their offense for decades were promised different when gunslinger Jay Cutler came to town last year, but instead ended up with a load of interceptions and a disappointing third-place finish. In 36 fewer passes than his final year in Denver, Cutler threw 8 more interceptions. Certainly a second year syncing up with WRs Johnny Knox, Devin Aromashadu and Devin Hester might help, but the hype around these WRs greatly surpasses the past performance. Old Vanderbilt teammate of Cutler's Earl Bennett had a reasonable year as a #2 WR, but required surgery in the offseason and missed the preseason.

FANTASY DEPTH CHART

QB

  • Cutler, Jay
  • Collins, Todd
  • Hanie, Caleb

RB

  • Forte, Matt
  • Taylor, Chester
  • Wolfe, Garrett

 WR

  • Knox, Johnny
  • Hester, Devin
  • Aromashodu, Devin
  • Davis, Rashied
  • Bennett, Earl

 TE

  • Olsen, Greg
  • Clark, Desmond

NOTE: Matt Forte is a divisive player for many fantasy owners, as many predict a reversion to 2008 All-Pro form and others remember the 2009 decline that derailed fantasy teams... The Bears have two reasonable tight ends, though as mentioned before it is a position that historically had contributed less to fast-paced Martz offenses... Don't sleep on the Bears defense, where the addition of Julius Peppers, return to health of Brian Urlacher, and a few lucky breaks on turnovers, could vault the unit back into the NFL's upper echelon... Bears schedule during the critical fantasy playoff weeks (14-16): home vs. Patriots, at Minnesota, vs. NY Jets.
