KEY SUBTRACTIONS

  • Booker, Marty WR (FA)
  • Stecker, Aaron RB (FA)

NOTE: They didn't add anyone significant this off-season, but they have enough to get back to the postseason.

THE BIG QUESTION

Will RB Michael Turner prove that he's not a flash in the pan?

After finally getting out of LaDainian Tomlinson's shadow in San Diego, he had a breakout season in '08, rushing for 1,699 yards and 17 TD. However, he didn't back up that success last season, rushing for just 871 yards and 10 TD. Yes, he did miss five games with an ankle injury, but there was more to it than that. He admitted that he was overweight, mostly due to a lack of healthy eating habits. So, he made it a focus this off-season to get leaner and prove that '08 was for real. Judging by that and the comments that he and his teammates have made this off-season, I see a rebound season from him, maybe an even better one than in '08. That will help third-year QB Matt Ryan, who with assistance from Turner's lack of production, had a drop-off in statistics as well last season. But their drop-offs really didn't affect Roddy White (85-1,153-11 in '09), who has quietly emerged as one of the league's top WR. And let's not forget about All-Pro and future HOF TE Tony Gonzalez, who showed last season that he still has some left in the tank.

ALSO

Don't expect much quality fantasy stats from the kicking game. Matt Bryant came in late last season to replace future HOF K Jason Elam, who showed that he was clearly at the downfall of his career (12 for 19 on FG attempts). Bryant of course is younger, but that doesn't automatically mean better results, as he went just 7 for 10 on FG attempts in the last five games of the season. And that's consistent with his career, as he has a career FG % of 81.5... The return game is a different story. Look out for undrafted WR Eric Weems, who emerged in the return game in his sophomore season, finishing in the top-10 with 1,214 kick return yards. He also showed some signs of being a decent punt returner, averaging 10 yards a return.
