OFF-SEASON TRANSACTIONS

KEY ADDS

  • Bryant, Antonio WR (FA)
  • Gresham, Jermaine TE (Draft)
  • Rayner, Dave PK (FA)

KEY SUBTRACTIONS

  • Coles, Laveranues WR (FA)
  • Johnson, Larry RB (FA)
  • Graham, Shayne PK (FA)

NOTE: Adding Bryant and drafting Gresham gives Palmer the extra weapons he needed. The loss of the veteran Graham and the addition of the inexperienced and rusty Rayner makes the kicking game a little less settling.

THE BIG QUESTION

What effect will the busy offseason have on the Bengals offense?

Led by the healthy Carson Palmer and the rejuvenated Cedric Benson, the Bengals offense got back on the winning track, making it back to the postseason. However, it was evident that in the Wildcard Round game vs. the defensive-strong Jets, they didn't have enough weapons to go far in the postseason. As a result, the organization has been offensive-minded in the offseason, with the addition of two-time 1,000+ yard WR Antonio Bryant , WR Matt Jones, and the drafting of TE Gresham and WRs Jordan Shipley and Dezmon Briscoe. The four players this should directly affect are WR Chad Ochocinco, WR Andre Caldwell, Benson, and Palmer. For Ochocinco, who had a nice comeback season in '09, having more support should open up more opportunities for him, who was clearly the only target by defenses, especially towards the end of the season. For Caldwell, the third option, he should be very motivated with the additions of the four new WRs. Though he won't be much of a fantasy option this season, as the addition of the rookie TE and the tall Jones should limit the red zone/clutch opportunities he got last season. For Benson, his '09 season success could easily roll into '10 with all the new weapons. However, judging from his past, including his latest arrest, which can cost him to miss some games, I believe its a gamble. In conclusion, I would find it hard to be comfortable in drafting him. Finally, for Palmer, his smile should be from ear-to-ear. He has an excellent chance to return to the 4,000-yard passer he was before an injured '08.

ALSO

The Special Teams unit will look alot different in '10. Losing Graham, who was pretty reliable in his seven seasons with the Bengals, will hurt the kicking game a little bit this season. They added Raynor and Mike Nugent to battle for the K position, but they both haven't been a starting K since the '07-08 season. When they have been the starting K, they have been pretty undependable, missing way too many FG attempts. They did improve in their return game with the gamble-like addition of Adam "Pacman" Jones, who has shown to be a successful returner when his head is on straight, and the drafting of Shipley, who was Colt McCoy's favorite target at the University of Texas. Along with WR Quan Cosby, it gives the Bengals some decent options.
