Joyce, Matt OF TB ($118 TC, - drop Patterson, Eric OF OAK)
Prior to the start of the season Joyce was penciled in to be the Rays starting right fielder, and was commonly targeted as a must have sleeper amongst industry experts. However, a strained right elbow sidetracked the young slugger, and he has spent the majority of the season rehabbing. Although he is still unable to throw at 100 percent, Joyce has found his way back to the majors, and very likely will find himself earning some at bats in a Rays outfield that has struggled as of late. However, with B.J. Upton, Carl Crawford, Ben Zobrist, Reid Brignac, and Sean Rodriguez all fighting for at bats between the outfield positions and second base Joyce doesn’t have a clear path to playing time. However, if he hits like he is capable of, .293, 3 homeruns, 12 RBI in 25 Triple-A games this season, the Rays will have to find him at bats. He is a high upside option, but one that may not pan out at all for you.
Hoffpauir, Jarret 2B/3B TOR ($77 TC, - drop Tuiasosopo, Matt 2B SEA and $220 U, - drop Rzepczynski, Matt SP TOR)
In the longest add/drop name combinations of the year, Hoffpauir found his way onto rosters in both leagues now that he is the Blue Jays starting third basemen. The Jays made waves when they designated Edwin Encarnacion for assignment and recalled Hoffpauir to take his starting, but the shakeup could very well pay off. Hoffpauir is far from a top prospect and his little experience at the big league level, but his .328 batting average, nine homeruns, and 43 RBI at Triple-A this season suggest that he is capable of swinging the bat. Hoffpauir has not gotten off to a particularly strong start in his first four starts, but manager Cito Gaston seems committed to giving him an opportunity to show his stuff. He won’t take the league by storm, but Hoffpauir is a nice add in AL-only leagues, especially if you are desperate for some offense (like me).
Oliver, Andrew SP DET ($60 U, - drop Rowland-Smith, Ryan SP SEA)
Oliver is a nice young prospect who has taken over Rick Porcello spot in the rotation, and who did well for himself in his first big league start (6 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 4 K). The 2009 second round pick was enjoying a good year in Double-A, and likely has a nice career ahead of him. However, at just 23, he may need some more time on the farm before he is able to consistently perform at the big league level. Furthermore, once Porcello gets his act together the Tigers will be quick to bring him back up (see Scherzer, Max). However, if Oliver continues to pitch as he did in his first start while Porcello works out his kinks, the Tigers will have no choice but to keep him in their rotation. He is worth a flier in AL-only leagues.
Hernandez, Anderson ($21 TC, - drop McGowan, Dustin SP TOR)
The Indians designated starting second basemen Luis Valbuena for assignment last week, opening up at bats for Hernandez. However, the Indians also claimed Jayson Nix off waivers from the White Sox, meaning that the second base job is not Hernandez’s alone. Furthermore, Hernandez is better known for his glove than his bat, and likely won’t put up great numbers even if he does get the bulk of the at bats. It all adds up to Hernandez being a low end AL-only option for owners desperate for at bats.
ALSO
Vin Mazzaro SP OAK was picked up after being dropped last week. He has been effective in three of his last four starts and showed be owned in deeper AL-only leagues… Bruce Chen SP KC was also added, but he’s Bruce Chen so you are better off avoiding him... Shelley Duncan OF CLE is an interesting add. We know from his time in the Bronx that he can mash, and if at bats come his way he could be a cheap source of homeruns… Someone picked up Anthony Lerew SP KC, do yourself a favor and don’t follow suite… A couple of back-up catchers were claimed Wilson Ramos C MIN and Ramon Castro C CHI… Last, but not least, Julio Lugo SS BAL was added for about the 8th time this season. He has been seeing more at bats recently.
