Gross, Gabe OF OAK ($141 TC, - drop Duchscherer, Justin SP OAK and $20 U, - drop Winn, Randy OF NYY)
Gross has started each of the A’s last nine games, and appears likely to stay in the line-up as long as he continues to swing the bat well. He is 9-24 in his last six games and is batting just under .300 for the season. While there isn’t much to suggest that Gross will be able to establish significant value the rest of the way, he is a nice short term option for anyone in an AL-only league with a hole in the outfield. Ride him while he is hot, and hope that he turns it into an everyday job for the rest of the season. It’s not like the A’s have a lot of guys breathing down his neck for playing time.
Hunter, Tommy SP TEX ($80 U, - drop Harrison, Matt SP TEX)
Last year Hunter won nine games and posted a 4.10 ERA in 19 starts for the Rangers. The 23-year-old doesn’t have overpowering stuff, as evidenced by his low strikeout totals, but with Derek Holland on the DL, he is being given the opportunity to prove that last season’s solid totals were no fluke. Hunter has been moderately effective at Triple-A Oklahoma while recovering from an oblique strain that kept him out of the Rangers rotation to start the season. Hunter is a nice AL-only pickup for teams in need of starting pitching. Don’t be shocked if he pitches well in Holland’s absence and sticks in the rotation.
Tallet, Brian SP TOR ($40 U, - drop Wheeler, Dan RP TB)
Tallet returned from an early season trip to the disabled list to make his fourth start of the season this past week. He allowed four hits and no runs against Tampa Bay in 5.2 innings. Despite the solid start, Tallet is not a good bet to establish value in AL-only leagues. He had a 5.33 ERA and 1,49 WHIP last year, as season in which he was shuffled between the rotation and the bullpen after spending the previous two season as a rather effective middle reliever. Jays manager Cito Gaston has said that Tallet will remain in the rotation for the time being, but it is only a matter of time before someone, perhaps Jesse Litsch, takes his spot. Furthermore, the numbers he posts while in the rotation may not be pretty.
Alfonzo, Eliezer C SEA ($26 TC, - drop Ramos, Wilson C MIN)
Alfonzo has started three of the Mariners past six games behind the plate. What’s promising is that he is 6-13 in those three games. What isn’t promising is that Alfonzo is a career .243 hitter. With Adam Moore scheduled to return by the middle of the month, there is a good chance Alfonzo’s stay with the big club will be short. Then again, both of the Mariners other options, Moore and Rob Johnson are hitting under .200. Even if Alfonzo is able to snag regular playing time, he has very limited upside and is only an option for owners in desperate need of help at the catcher position.
ALSO
It was a quiet week on the waiver wire for the most part in both leagues. Omar Vizquel was added in TC. He has been getting at bats with Mark Teahan on the disabled list, and has been hitting the ball surprisingly well. He is a nice stopgap option. Also in TC relievers Robinson Tejada and Shawn Kelley were added, but neither looks like anything more than a middle relief option at this point. Also the aforementioned Jesse Litsch was added. If he finds his way into the Jays rotation, he could be a steal for the $1 that was paid for him. In Ultimate, Jason Frasor was also rostered, and Twins rookie third basemen Danny Valencia was picked up. Frasor looks like nothing more than a middle relief option, while Valencia may see some at bats while Michael Cuddyer recovers from a minor injury, but is nothing more than a short term stopgap option.
ROOKIE WATCH
Carlos Santana’s promotion to the bigs could happen any day now. If no one has the stud catching prospect in your league, he is worth an add immediately. He may not have the type of immediate impact Buster Posey is currently having, but he will probably be owned in most mixed leagues by the end of the season.
