Blalock, Hank 1B TB ($150 TC, - drop Kelley, Shawn RP SEA and $170 U, - drop Teagarden, Taylor C TEX)
With Pat Burrell out of the picture, the Rays have a big hole at the designated hitter position. Enter Hank Blalock. He may share at bats with Willy Aybar, but Blalock is clearly the better hitter and is more likely to emerge as the everyday starter. Blalock has had an up and down career, but he is a reliable source of power, which could result in big numbers as a member of one of baseball’s best line-ups. Run, don’t walk, to pick up Blalock. He could pay off in a big way.
Galarraga, Armando P DET ($60 U, - drop Griffey, Ken DH SEA and $55 TC, - drop Bedard, Erik SP SEA)
Due to his tremendous struggles, the Tigers sent down Max Scherzer opening a spot in the rotation for Galarraga. After a successful first start, Galarraga appears likely to stick in the rotation, at least for the time being. Galarraga had a tremendous rookie season in 2008, but struggled last season. He has been pretty good at Triple-A Toldeo this season, and the time in the minors will likely benefit him in the long run. I wouldn’t rely on him, but he is worth taking a flier on in hopes that he regains his 2008 form.
Crowe, Trevor OF CLE ($60 U, - drop Buck, Travis OF OAK)
Crowe wasn’t hitting much at Triple-A Columbus, but he has been raking since being called-up to fill in for the injured Grady Sizemore. He has started seven straight games for the Tribe, so he clearly is going to be the Indians’ centerfielder until Sizemore returns (at least mid-June). Crowe is a great pick up in AL only leagues if you are in need of an outfielder. He doesn’t have much pop, but he can steal bases and post a nice average. If you lost Travis Snider or Sizemore this week, Crowe is a nice target.
Sweeney, Mike DH SEA ($32 TC, - drop Casilla, Alexi 2B MIN)
The Mariners have a lot of options in the outfield and at designated hitter, but Sweeney is the hottest of them all at the moment. Milton Bradley is back and will likely remain in the line-up, but Michael Saunders has struggled lately and is seeing his playing time decrease, and Ken Griffey is hitting under .200. That means that Sweeney may be in line for increased at bats, especially if he stays hot. He is 11-29 in his last seven games and just had a four hit, two home run, six RBI game. Ride Sweeney while he is hot, and don’t be surprised if he sees four or five starts a week for the remainder of the season.
ALSO
Josh Bard C SEA is a nice add for someone in need of some help at the catcher position in the short term. He should share at bats with Rob Johnson while Adam Moore is on the DL… Last week I mentioned Jason Donald SS CLE as an interesting option should opportunity strike. It did. Asdrubal Cabrera’s injury opens the door for Donald who is a nice add in all AL-only leagues… After a 2-5 big league debut, Trevor Plouffe SS MIN may earn himself some more at bats while J.J. Hardy is on the disabled list. He could be a decent short term pick-up if he gets the at bats… Tim Wakefield SP BOS is back in the rotation, perhaps for an extended period, so add him if he was dropped in your league. His numbers haven’t been pretty, but expect him to turn things around… Juan Miranda 1B NY is getting some at bats due to all the injuries the Yanks have suffered. He should to get at bats here and there, but he isn’t anything more than a short term AL-only stop gate.
