Hughes, Rhyne 1B BAL ($130 U, - drop Valencia, Danny 3B MIN and $103 TC, - Smith, Joe RP CLE)
With Garrett Atkins struggling, the Orioles decided to call-up Hughes, who was raking in the minors. The 26-year-old has never been considered a top prospect, but has put up some solid numbers in the minors, especially in the power department. Hughes strikes out too often, which is likely to limit his success some, but there is no reason to think he can’t become the Orioles everyday first basemen. Expect Hughes to share at bats with Atkins until one of them gets hot and wrestles away the everyday job.
Jaso, John C TB ($110 U, - drop Kelly, Casey SP BOS)
If he is still available, Jaso is a strong add in AL only leagues. He is currently raking, and will continue to see at bats over Dioner Navarro as long as he stays hot. He is had moderate success in the minors, and could very well be the Rays full time starting catcher before long. He is worth a strong bid in AL leagues if still available.
Simon, Alfredo RP BAL ($86 TC, - drop Tallet, Brian SP TOR and $20 U, - drop Iztruis, Cesar SS BAL)
A few weeks ago Alfredo Simon was a minor league starting pitcher, and now he might be the Orioles intern closer. Since Mike Gonzalez’s injury, the O’s bullpen has struggled to get the job done, but Simon was thrust into a save situation this past week against the Yankees, and got the job done. That alone may have been enough to make him the current go to guy in the Baltimore bullpen. As long as he is getting saves opportunities, Simon is worth an add in AL only leagues. However, there is little in his past to suggest that he will have continued success in the role.
Powell, Landon C OAK ($20 TC, - drop Castro, Ramon C CHI)
With Kurt Suzuki on the DL, Powell is in line for at bats. However, Suzuki is only expected to be on the shelf until mid-May and Jake Fox could steal starts from Powell as well. Powell is a solid big league back-up, but doesn’t hit enough to warrant much excitement even if he is playing everyday. If your desperate for a catcher, he may be worth an add. Otherwise, he can be ignored.
ALSO
All of the Boston outfielders continue to be popular adds. Both Darnell McDonald and Jonathan Van Every were scooped up this week, and will maintain value while Jacoby Ellsbury and Mike Cameron remain on the shelf… Vin Mazzaro SP OAK was added, but Trevor Cahill SP OAK got the nod to take Brett Anderson’s spot in the rotation. Despite a poor first appearance, Cahill is worth an add… Mark Grudzielanek 2B CLE was picked up and is a decent option in the middle infield… Following his best outing in what seems like years, Dontrelle Willis was added in the Ultimate League. He has been surprisingly decent this season, and is worth using as a low end starter.
