MLB - 2010 Fantasy Baseball Expert League Update (April)

I represent RotoCommunity in several fantasy baseball expert leagues this summer. We'll post an update here once per month. I would have waited until May 1 to post this one, but considering the circumstances, I wanted to get this one up today. I'll let you know the top teams in each league (or my division, in the h2h leagues) with a link to the standings plus some notes...
RotoCommunity established three TRIPLE CROWN leagues this year, one for each player pool (Mixed, AL-only, and NL-only). Each is a 12-team, auction, standard 5x5 roto league with weekly line-up and FAAB settings. And the reason I'm posting today is that as of today, Tuesday, April 20, I'm actually in first in all three!

I lost Montero and Mike Gonzalez here and am waiting for Beltran to get back, but the team is structured correctly in order to overcome that. You can read the draft analysis for the whole story. Briefly, though, my hitting and pitching anchors (M.Cabrera, J.Upton, Wainwright, B.Wilson) are doing their jobs, and my supporting players (Cantu, M.Byrd, R.Romero) are, too.I'm weak in R and SB right now, but if Borbon figures things out, he can help fix that.
TRIPLE CROWN AL-ONLY
| Rank | Team | Batting | Pitching | Total | Dif | Behind |
| 1 | RotoCommunity Gawron | 45.0 | 41.5 | 86.5 | 7.0 | 0.0 |
| 2 | RotoCommunity Schuman | 40.0 | 44.5 | 84.5 | 2.5 | 2.0 |
| 3 | SportingNews Winkler | 39.5 | 40.5 | 80.0 | -0.5 | 6.5 |

I focused on solid, every-day starters at each position and scrimped a bit at CI, MI, U, and P (after the anchor SP and RP). The great thing here is that I'm dead last in saves with only Bailey at closer, and my BA is lower than it should be on the hitting side. "Lesser" players like Jose Bautista, Teahen, and Carmona have helped so far. I'm looking forward to Drew and Pierzynski breaking out of their slumps and Aaron Hill getting back on the field and providing some extra power.
TRIPLE CROWN NL-ONLY
| Rank | Team | Batting | Pitching | Total | Dif | Behind |
| 1 | RotoCommunity Gawron | 48.0 | 48.5 | 96.5 | -1.5 | 0.0 |
| 2 | FantasyBaseballSherpa Swanay | 39.5 | 46.5 | 86.0 | 2.5 | 10.5 |
| 3 | Million Dollar Sleeper | 54.5 | 19.0 | 73.5 | -1.0 | 23.0 |

Again, in the single universe league, I focused on solid, every-day starters at each position and scrimped a bit at CI, MI, U, and P (after the anchor SP and RP). I actually felt that this was my weakest draft because I walked away with very shallow starting pitching. However, I took some MR to cover and then picked up Jaime Garcia and Nate Robertson via FAAB, and Lilly returns this week, so that weakness is turning into a strength. Getting Morales and Madson for cheap saves helped. I was also happy to get Heyward at a reasonable price ($15) and look forward to better days from Pence (.171) and Stubbs (.118).

I'm partnering with Pat Mayo in this one. Wins is our worst category here, which is a good thing, as it can improve based solely on luck.It was good to just move Beckham over to MI and Blake up to CI. Aardsma and Franklin have been good "mid-level" closers for us so far, and our lesser SPs streaming in (Marcum, Zito, Correia) have gotten the job done thus far.

I'm partnering with Buck Davidson here. We came in with a good strategy here, and I feel like we're even exceeding expectations. I'll write more next time, but it looks like we'll do quite well in this league.

I waited until my offense was almost totally set before taking a pitcher in this one, and it paid off. My offense is monstrous (Longoria, Morneau, Choo, Butler), and my young bargain pitching staff (Feliz, Hughes, Braden, Romero, Santana) is doing just fine, thank you.

The great thing here is that I invested heavily in keepers (Heyward, Posey, Strasburg, D.Brown, Stanton, S.Castro). I expected a slow start, but my vets (Kemp, Howard, Halladay, Oswalt, Cantu, Polanco, Zito) are pulling through. I won the championship last year and hope to repeat in 2010.
Good luck to you in all your leagues, and hopefully we can help you win with our Waiver Wire analysis and Line-up Planner articles this season.
