LINE-UP
- Sanchez, Freddy 2B (knee, should be ready for spring training)
- Renteria, Edgar SS (elbow, should be ready for spring training)
- Sandoval, Pablo 3B
- Huff, Aubrey 1B
- Molina, Bengie C
- DeRosa, Mark LF
- Schierholtz, Nate RF
- Rowand, Aaron CF
After a season mired in offensive incompetence, the Giants broke out the checkbook and seriously upgraded the starting line-up. While Pablo Sandoval is the only real standout in the bunch, San Francisco can now churn out a line-up that should benefit from the change of scenery in the NL West. Huff and DeRosa will provide a power surge in the middle of the order and should be quality roster-fillers at the corner infield position on your fantasy team. A rebound from Renteria would would not be unexpected, as he's always been better in the National League. Sanchez is a plus player in battling average and should increase his run total with the new found power hitting behind him. Bengie Molina will return for another season of matching duties and should make an adequate starting catcher. He hit a few home runs and drive in his fair share, but don't expect too much speed from baseball's slowest player. Molina could be a risky selection because the Giants want to work Rookie catcher Buster Posey into the mix as well. Posey could be a nice pick-up as the season progresses, but hold off for now and wait to see how his playing time shakes out. The Giants have some nice bench options, too. Utility man Juan Uribe will get plenty of playing time, providing decent power in limited at-bats. Eugenio Velez (speed), Andres Torres (more speed), and John Bowker (power) are other noteworthy SF bench denizens. The revamped line-up won't set the world on fire, but an upgrade to the middle of the pack is all the Giants needed to make them serious contenders in the NL.
STARTING ROTATION
- Lincecum, Tim RHP
- Cain, Matt RHP
- Zito, Barry LHP (elbow, should be ready for spring training)
- Sanchez, Jonathan LHP
- Bumgarner, Madison LHP
- Pucetas, Kevin RHP
- Martinez, Joe RHP
When talking about the Giants starting rotation it starts and end with two people -- reigning (two time) Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum followed by Matt Cain, coming off a breakout year. Tiny Tim will fall off draft boards in the first round, and Cain will be a Top 10 NL hurler. Both are excellent options to bolster your pitching staffs this season. Zito will do nothing but eat innings, despite making twice as much moolah as anyone else on the roster. Because of his hilariously terrible contract, you can count on the always healthy Zito to make 30+ starts. Consider him a match-up play only. Jonathan Sanchez, of no-hitter notoriety, shows flashes of brilliance every year but can never seem to put it all together for an entire season. He's an excellence source of strikeouts and could make a very nice late round pick or a dollar flier in an auction. Rookie Madison Bumgarner may have a surprise season if he can manage to stay in the majors for any extended period of time. San Fran's starting rotation should carry the team to the playoffs, where their one-two punch will be deadly.
BULLPEN
- Wilson, Brian RHP
- Affeldt, Jeremy LHP
- Medders, Brandon RHP
- Romo, Sergio RHP
- Sosa, Henry RHP
- Runzler, Dan LHP
- Bautista, Denny RHP
- Valdez, Merkin RHP
The Giants' Brian Wilson may not pump out jams like Good Vibrations and Surfin' USA, but he should pile up the saves anyways. Wilson may hurt your ERA, but he'll be an excellent contributor in Ks and WHIP. Set-up man Jeremy Afleldt should improve on his 33 holds with the improved offense. The loss of Bob Howry to Arizona should open the door for Brandon Medders, who could come in handy for some holds and the occasional save.
