2009 RECORD: 93-69, 1st in NL East, World Series losers 4-2 (NYY)
The Phillies had a great year in 2009 but just couldn't close the door on the Yanks in the Series. Phillies fans will probably give them a mulligan, as they just won the Series the year before, destroying the Rays.
Stat table note: The better the ranking number, the better the stat, in all categories. For example, for the SO cat for hitting, a #2 ranking means that the team tallied the second fewest strikeouts. For the BB and SB cats for pitching, the #1 teams allowed the fewest bases on balls and steals.
| Hitting | BA | R | HR | BB | SO | SB |
| Stats | 258 | 820 | 224 | 589 | 1155 | 119 |
| NL | 9T | 1 | 1 | 7 | 8 | 2 |
| MLB | 21T | 4 | 2T | 10 | 19 | 7 |
| Pitching | BAA | ERA | HR | BB | SO | SB |
| Stats | 265 | 4.16 | 189 | 489 | 1153 | 95 |
| NL | 12 | 6 | 15 | 2 | 9 | 9 |
| MLB | 18 | 8 | 28 | 3 | 12 | 14 |
LINE-UP
- Rollins, Jimmy SS
- Polanco, Placido 3B
- Utley, Chase 2B
- Howard, Ryan 1B
- Ibanez, Raul LF
- Werth, Jason RF
- Victorino, Shane CF
- Ruiz, Carlos C
The powerful line-up (#1 in the NL in runs and HRs) was pretty much what got the Phils to the World Series last year. Led by Utley, Howard, Ibanez, and Werth in the middle, the Phils had no trouble scoring runs in 09. Swapping Polanco in at 3B for Feliz should help set the table even more, and Philly should continue to be strong on the basepaths, even with Victorino down in the order. Werth and Ibanez should flip spots vs LHPs. They have a solid bench, too. Ben Francisco will likely replace Ibanez against tough LHPs. John Mayberry is a decent enough prospect if an injury strikes. Brian Schneider should play a good deal at catcher, though he's not much of a hitter. Juan Castro will take over utility duties for Eric Bruntlett, and Greg Dobbs remains an excellent pinch-hitter.
STARTING ROTATION
- Halladay, Roy RHP
- Hamels, Cole LHP
- Blanton, Joe RHP
- Happ, J.A. LHP
- Kendrick, Kyle RHP
- Moyer, Jamie LHP (groin, knee)
- Bastardo, Antonio LHP
- Carpenter, Andrew RHP
The Phillies staff was pretty average last year, but things picked up when Cliff Lee arrived. Halladay is a super-stud that will take the place of Cliff Lee. Hamels was a little off in 09 but looks to rebound in 2010. Blanton looks to be trending up. Happ's numbers should dip as a full-time starter, but he'll still be good. Moyer will not be ready on Opening Day and may have to be a reliever all year when he does return. Kendrick and Carpenter are uninspiring, and Bastardo probably isn't ready yet. There's talk of signing Ben Sheets or Chien-Ming Wang, which would be a good fix at SP5.
BULLPEN
- Lidge, Brad RHP (elbow)
- Madson, Ryan RHP
- Baez, Danys RHP
- Romero, J.C. LHP (forearm)
- Durbin, Chad RHP
- Escalona, Sergio LHP
- Mathieson, Scott RHP
- Zagurski, Mike LHP
The bullpen is the weakest area for the Phillies by far. If Lidge and Romero aren't ready for opening day, Madson and Baez will assume late-inning duties, but the Phils are best served with Lidge and Romero healthy and effective. Lidge was awful last season, but the hope is that his prowess returns with his health. Mathieson and Zagurski will hopefully return from their injuries well enough to anchor the back end of the bullpen this year. The Phils could still go after more free agents. Stay tuned.
