2009-2010 is Year One of the new experts league, the Yahoo Hoops Challenge (YHC). Here are our team reps for the current season:

  1. CHI SportsGrumblings.com (Damian Schaab)
  2. PHI HoopsKLYCE.com (David Klyce)
  3. DAL GiveMeTheRock.com (Erik Ong)
  4. DET ESPN.com (Tom Carpenter)
  5. MIA FantasyPros911 (Tony Cincotta)
  6. SEA Rotoworld.com (Ryan Knaus)
  7. MIL Rotowire.com (Kyle McKeown)
  8. BOS RotoCommunity.com (Dave Gawron)
  9. MEM MockDraftCentral.com (Geoff Stein)
  10. ORL RotoRob.com (Buck Davidson)
  11. NY RotoExperts.com (Tom Lorenzo)
  12. CLE OpenSPORTS.com (Xavier Villarmarzo)

Player position eligibility is provided by the Yahoo League Commissioner. It's a basic h2h 9-cat league (FG%, FT%, 3s, Rb, Ast, St, Bk, TO, Pts) where teams get a win each week per category won. We used the default Yahoo line-up/roster configuration (2C-F-PF-SF-G-SG-PG-2FLEX) and 3 reserves. Our 6-team playoffs run during Weeks 21-23. We selected NBA cities to represent, most near where we love, otherwise favorite NBA teams. Here's how the draft went down round-by-round, with brief analysis following each round.

ROUND 1

1. Chris Paul CHI SportsGrumblings.com (Damian Schaab)
2. LeBron James PHI HoopsKLYCE.com (David Klyce)
3. Dwyane Wade DAL GiveMeTheRock.com (Erik Ong)
4. Kevin Durant DET ESPN.com (Tom Carpenter)
5. Deron Williams MIA FantasyPros911 (Tony Cincotta)
6. Kobe Bryant SEA Rotoworld.com (Ryan Knaus)
7. Danny Granger MIL Rotowire.com (Kyle McKeown)
8. Dirk Nowitzki BOS RotoCommunity.com (Dave Gawron)
9. Amar'e Stoudemire MEM MockDraftCentral.com (Geoff Stein)
10. Dwight Howard ORL RotoRob.com (Buck Davidson)
11. Chris Bosh NY RotoExperts.com (Tom Lorenzo)
12. Brandon Roy CLE OpenSPORTS.com (Xavier Villarmarzo)

That early Deron pick... If you believe getting that big point guard is a priority, I'd say take him #7 ahead of Dirk. I personally couldn't stomach passing on Kobe or Granger for Williams. Dirk is about as safe as you get after the Big 6 are off the board. In Yahoo, with their generous center eligibility, I knew I could get centers later. Dwight goes in the first round since his FT% doesn't hurt as much in h2h as in straight roto. Also, if you play Yahoo, PLEASE set your Yahoorankings before the draft. You don't want to waste any time during the draft looking for a player. It should take you about 20 minutes to use their app to set our Top 150 in their system.

ROUND 2

1. Al Jefferson CLE OpenSPORTS.com (Xavier Villarmarzo)
2. Pau Gasol NY RotoExperts.com (Tom Lorenzo)
3. Chauncey Billups ORL RotoRob.com (Buck Davidson)
4. Jose Calderon MEM MockDraftCentral.com (Geoff Stein)
5. Steve Nash BOS RotoCommunity.com (Dave Gawron)
6. Andre Iguodala MIL Rotowire.com (Kyle McKeown)
7. Caron Butler SEA Rotoworld.com (Ryan Knaus)
8. Joe Johnson MIA FantasyPros911 (Tony Cincotta)
9. Devin Harris DET ESPN.com (Tom Carpenter)
10. Jason Kidd DAL GiveMeTheRock.com (Erik Ong)
11. Tim Duncan PHI HoopsKLYCE.com (David Klyce)
12. Gerald Wallace CHI SportsGrumblings.com (Damian Schaab)

I like to nab a PG in Round 2 if I don't get Paul or Deron, and Nash offered the most assists, so I went with him. There was nothing really exciting going on in this round. It was your typical 09-10 Round 2.

ROUND 3

1. David West CHI SportsGrumblings.com (Damian Schaab)
2. Kevin Martin PHI HoopsKLYCE.com (David Klyce)
3. Brook Lopez DAL GiveMeTheRock.com (Erik Ong)
4. Josh Smith DET ESPN.com (Tom Carpenter)
5. Kevin Garnett MIA FantasyPros911 (Tony Cincotta)
6. Antawn Jamison SEA Rotoworld.com (Ryan Knaus)
7. Carmelo Anthony MIL Rotowire.com (Kyle McKeown)
8. Gilbert Arenas BOS RotoCommunity.com (Dave Gawron)
9. Vince Carter MEM MockDraftCentral.com (Geoff Stein)
10. Paul Pierce ORL RotoRob.com (Buck Davidson)
11. Troy Murphy NY RotoExperts.com (Tom Lorenzo)
12. Jason Richardson CLE OpenSPORTS.com (Xavier Villarmarzo)

There are good reports about Jamison, but still, I would have waited until the next round. I'm buying into Arenas this year, who has a shot at returning second round value. The guy was a fantasy beast two years back before the injuries set in. Richardson is good, but not that good. If I were Xavier, I would have gone for a PG like Rondo, Monta, or Rose there.

ROUND 4

1. Carlos Boozer CLE OpenSPORTS.com (Xavier Villarmarzo)
2. Rajon Rondo NY RotoExperts.com (Tom Lorenzo)
3. David Lee ORL RotoRob.com (Buck Davidson)
4. Andrea Bargnani MEM MockDraftCentral.com (Geoff Stein)
5. Monta Ellis BOS RotoCommunity.com (Dave Gawron)
6. Rashard Lewis MIL Rotowire.com (Kyle McKeown)
7. Shawn Marion SEA Rotoworld.com (Ryan Knaus)
8. Elton Brand MIA FantasyPros911 (Tony Cincotta)
9. Derrick Rose DET ESPN.com (Tom Carpenter)
10. LaMarcus Aldridge DAL GiveMeTheRock.com (Erik Ong)
11. Andrew Bynum PHI HoopsKLYCE.com (David Klyce)
12. Baron Davis CHI SportsGrumblings.com (Damian Schaab)
I'm not a Boozer fan after last season. I wanted Rondo here but settled for Monta. I like Brand here, but Marion doesn't need to go this early anymore, especially on the stacked Dallas team. Rose offers nice value in Round 4.

ROUND 5

1. Andris Biedrins CHI SportsGrumblings.com (Damian Schaab)
2. Mo Williams PHI HoopsKLYCE.com (David Klyce)
3. Al Harrington DAL GiveMeTheRock.com (Erik Ong)
4. Russell Westbrook DET ESPN.com (Tom Carpenter)
5. Marcus Camby MIA FantasyPros911 (Tony Cincotta)
6. Jameer Nelson SEA Rotoworld.com (Ryan Knaus)
7. Greg Oden MIL Rotowire.com (Kyle McKeown)
8. Al Horford BOS RotoCommunity.com (Dave Gawron)
9. Charlie Villanueva MEM MockDraftCentral.com (Geoff Stein)
10. Mehmet Okur ORL RotoRob.com (Buck Davidson)
11. Eric Gordon NY RotoExperts.com (Tom Lorenzo)
12. Emeka Okafor CLE OpenSPORTS.com (Xavier Villarmarzo)

I love Russ Westbrook here. I'd take Oden over Camby. I settled for Horford, who should be solid. It feels Early for Charlie V, and Okafor's injury worries me a bit.

ROUND 6

1. Tony Parker CLE OpenSPORTS.com (Xavier Villarmarzo)
2. Anthony Randolph NY RotoExperts.com (Tom Lorenzo)
3. Ray Allen ORL RotoRob.com (Buck Davidson)
4. Luis Scola MEM MockDraftCentral.com (Geoff Stein)
5. Nene Hilario BOS RotoCommunity.com (Dave Gawron)
6. Rudy Gay MIL Rotowire.com (Kyle McKeown)
7. John Salmons SEA Rotoworld.com (Ryan Knaus)
8. Rodney Stuckey MIA FantasyPros911 (Tony Cincotta)
9. Spencer Hawes DET ESPN.com (Tom Carpenter)
10. Jason Terry DAL GiveMeTheRock.com (Erik Ong)
11. Michael Redd PHI HoopsKLYCE.com (David Klyce)
12. Boris Diaw CHI SportsGrumblings.com (Damian Schaab)

As I've written before, Randolph could really explode. I needed a second FGP-PTS-REB-BLK center, and Nene should deliver. Hawes would have been my other choice. Stuckey feels early here.

ROUND 7

1. Wilson Chandler CHI SportsGrumblings.com (Damian Schaab)
2. Tyrus Thomas PHI HoopsKLYCE.com (David Klyce)
3. Jeff Green DAL GiveMeTheRock.com (Erik Ong)
4. Paul Millsap DET ESPN.com (Tom Carpenter)
5. Manu Ginobili MIA FantasyPros911 (Tony Cincotta)
6. Ben Gordon SEA Rotoworld.com (Ryan Knaus)
7. O.J. Mayo MIL Rotowire.com (Kyle McKeown)
8. Stephen Jackson BOS RotoCommunity.com (Dave Gawron)
9. Leandro Barbosa MEM MockDraftCentral.com (Geoff Stein)
10. Andre Miller ORL RotoRob.com (Buck Davidson)
11. Blake Griffin NY RotoExperts.com (Tom Lorenzo)
12. Josh Howard CLE OpenSPORTS.com (Xavier Villarmarzo)

The round started with four nice upside picks. Jackson's FGP & TOs hurt, but I think my other players can make up for that. He's a value in Round 7.

ROUND 8

1. Michael Beasley CLE OpenSPORTS.com (Xavier Villarmarzo)
2. Ron Artest NY RotoExperts.com (Tom Lorenzo)
3. Zach Randolph ORL RotoRob.com (Buck Davidson)
4. Trevor Ariza MEM MockDraftCentral.com (Geoff Stein)
5. Hedo Turkoglu BOS RotoCommunity.com (Dave Gawron)
6. Mike Bibby MIL Rotowire.com (Kyle McKeown)
7. Rasheed Wallace SEA Rotoworld.com (Ryan Knaus)
8. J.R. Smith MIA FantasyPros911 (Tony Cincotta)
9. Andrew Bogut DET ESPN.com (Tom Carpenter)
10. Mario Chalmers DAL GiveMeTheRock.com (Erik Ong)
11. Raymond Felton PHI HoopsKLYCE.com (David Klyce)
12. T.J. Ford CHI SportsGrumblings.com (Damian Schaab)

Randolph offers value this late. Hedo is one of those across-the-board roster fillers that works for me here. Personally, I think Bibby should go later and will decline with Crawford taking minutes from him. Wallace is too early here, too, but I do like the Smith and PG picks.

ROUND 9

1. Shaquille O'Neal CHI SportsGrumblings.com (Damian Schaab)
2. Roy Hibbert PHI HoopsKLYCE.com (David Klyce)
3. Richard Jefferson DAL GiveMeTheRock.com (Erik Ong)
4. Jason Thompson DET ESPN.com (Tom Carpenter)
5. Thaddeus Young MIA FantasyPros911 (Tony Cincotta)
6. Joakim Noah SEA Rotoworld.com (Ryan Knaus)
7. Nate Robinson MIL Rotowire.com (Kyle McKeown)
8. Mike Conley BOS RotoCommunity.com (Dave Gawron)
9. Courtney Lee MEM MockDraftCentral.com (Geoff Stein)
10. Chris Duhon ORL RotoRob.com (Buck Davidson)
11. Ronnie Brewer NY RotoExperts.com (Tom Lorenzo)
12. Kevin Love CLE OpenSPORTS.com (Xavier Villarmarzo)

This is where you need to draft Hibbert now if you want him... and you want him this season. I'm actually a fan of all the picks in this round except for Duhon (who I'd peg a couple of rounds later).

ROUND 10

1. Luol Deng CLE OpenSPORTS.com (Xavier Villarmarzo)
2. Aaron Brooks NY RotoExperts.com (Tom Lorenzo)
3. Marc Gasol ORL RotoRob.com (Buck Davidson)
4. Tyreke Evans MEM MockDraftCentral.com (Geoff Stein)
5. Tyson Chandler BOS RotoCommunity.com (Dave Gawron)
6. Samuel Dalembert MIL Rotowire.com (Kyle McKeown)
7. Shane Battier SEA Rotoworld.com (Ryan Knaus)
8. Jermaine O'Neal MIA FantasyPros911 (Tony Cincotta)
9. Chris Kaman DET ESPN.com (Tom Carpenter)
10. D.J. Augustin DAL GiveMeTheRock.com (Erik Ong)
11. Louis Williams PHI HoopsKLYCE.com (David Klyce)
12. Andrei Kirilenko CHI SportsGrumblings.com (Damian Schaab)

Tyreke could really have a great rookie year. I just took Chandler to use when I feel I need extra rebounds and blocks in my line-up (and when he's actually healthy). D.J. could be great with Bell hurt. Williams is a nice value here.

ROUND 11

1. Chris Andersen CHI SportsGrumblings.com (Damian Schaab)
2. Marvin Williams PHI HoopsKLYCE.com (David Klyce)
3. Brandon Jennings DAL GiveMeTheRock.com (Erik Ong)
4. Stephen Curry DET ESPN.com (Tom Carpenter)
5. Hakim Warrick MIA FantasyPros911 (Tony Cincotta)
6. Lamar Odom SEA Rotoworld.com (Ryan Knaus)
7. Brandon Rush MIL Rotowire.com (Kyle McKeown)
8. Jonny Flynn BOS RotoCommunity.com (Dave Gawron)
9. Antonio McDyess MEM MockDraftCentral.com (Geoff Stein)
10. Mike Miller ORL RotoRob.com (Buck Davidson)
11. Channing Frye NY RotoExperts.com (Tom Lorenzo)
12. Allen Iverson CLE OpenSPORTS.com (Xavier Villarmarzo)

I was looking at Warrick here, but decided that Flynn was the best option once Warrick was picked before me. Frye is a nice one there.

ROUND 12

1. Anderson Varejao CLE OpenSPORTS.com (Xavier Villarmarzo)
2. Anthony Morrow NY RotoExperts.com (Tom Lorenzo)
3. Ryan Gomes ORL RotoRob.com (Buck Davidson)
4. Drew Gooden MEM MockDraftCentral.com (Geoff Stein)
5. Richard Hamilton BOS RotoCommunity.com (Dave Gawron)
6. James Harden MIL Rotowire.com (Kyle McKeown)
7. Jamal Crawford SEA Rotoworld.com (Ryan Knaus)
8. Ramon Sessions MIA FantasyPros911 (Tony Cincotta)
9. Jarrett Jack DET ESPN.com (Tom Carpenter)
10. Brad Miller DAL GiveMeTheRock.com (Erik Ong)
11. Marreese Speights PHI HoopsKLYCE.com (David Klyce)
12. Grant Hill CHI SportsGrumblings.com (Damian Schaab)

Gomes will do well while love is out. I needed some scoring, so that's why I took Rip here, as he should still average at least 17.0. I worry about the minutes for Crawford, Sessions, and Jack coming off the bench, but they're okay here if you need guard help.

ROUND 13

1. Brendan Haywood CHI SportsGrumblings.com (Damian Schaab)
2. Kirk Hinrich PHI HoopsKLYCE.com (David Klyce)
3. Danilo Gallinari DAL GiveMeTheRock.com (Erik Ong)
4. Yi Jianlian DET ESPN.com (Tom Carpenter)
5. Corey Maggette MIA FantasyPros911 (Tony Cincotta)
6. Kelenna Azubuike SEA Rotoworld.com (Ryan Knaus)
7. Chris Douglas-Roberts MIL Rotowire.com (Kyle McKeown)
8. Udonis Haslem BOS RotoCommunity.com (Dave Gawron)
9. Anthony Parker MEM MockDraftCentral.com (Geoff Stein)
10. Tayshaun Prince ORL RotoRob.com (Buck Davidson)
11. Randy Foye NY RotoExperts.com (Tom Lorenzo)
12. Delonte West CLE OpenSPORTS.com (Xavier Villarmarzo)

Gallinari and Yi are nice lottery tickets here. I felt I needed Haslem on my bench for weeks when I want more rebounds.

My take...
written by lorenzo, October 26, 2009
My post on the draft just went live. I didn't have enough space to do an entire draft analysis, but my thoughts on my team are on the site.

I also didn't get to write about how Buck let RotoRob down by passing on his boy Hedo Turkoglu... smilies/wink.gif

Thanks Dave!

Accounting for Dwight's awful FT pct.
written by buck, October 24, 2009
I very seldom draft Howard - in fact, my typical H2H strategy is to punt blocks - but I thought I'd give it a go this time. The big nnock on Superman is of course his Shaq-esque performance from the charity stripe - he shoots a ton of free throws and only makes about 60 percent of them. Even so, I didn't feel like simply punting FT pct and calling it a day - especially after Rajon Rondo failed to fall to me in Round 4. smilies/cry.gif

Billups in the second round was not just a random grab, and the argument could well be made that Nash would have been a better choice. Consider this, though: Billups is deadly accurate (91.3 last year) from the line and (here's the important part) attempts more than double the numbers of free throws as either Nash or Jose Calderon. Taking Chauncey - and following with Paul Pierce's 83 percent (on nearly seven attempts per game) brought my team FT pct. up to 74 percent. Hmmm....league average was 77.1 last season - maybe Ft pct isn't a punt after all.

That being said, Rondo would still have been my 4th round pick had he been on the board, but when he went at the 3-4 turn I resolved to try to boost my FT pct (and watch my turnovers) during the rest of the draft. I didn't get militant about it, but whenever I had a choice between players I took the one that performed better from the stripe.

When the dust settled, my team FT pct stood at 77 percent - or right at the league average from last season. While that's not a stellar number, it should not mean an automatic "L" in a 12-team H2H league. If you remove Dwight from the equation, the number is 81 percent - which could win more times than not. If Dwight were to get injured, I could still field a competitive team that would be very strong in both pct categories, rebounds and points, and very solid in threes and turnovers.

If you end up with Dwight, consider this alternate strategy I employed. I'd still recommend punting if the cards fall your way, but I believe that this is a viable alternative that not only keeps you in running for the FT pct cat, but also makes for a stronger "fall-back" team should Superman bump into some Kryptonite out there.

Good luck this season.

Buck
