Arrieta, Jake SP BAL ($140 U, - drop Snell, Ian SP SEA)

Arrieta is a top notch prospect who likely earned himself a long term stay in the Orioles rotation with a strong major league debut against the Yankees.  Arrieta has fantastic stuff, but there are questions surrounding his command.  Ultimately, Arrieta may end up in the bullpen in the long run, but the O’s will give him a chance to succeed as a starter for the time being.  He could prove to be quite successful in the role, so if he is available he is well worth an add in AL-only leagues, and could quickly work himself into a mixed league option.

Gross, Gabe OF OAK ($141 TC, - drop Duchscherer, Justin SP OAK and $20 U, - drop Winn, Randy OF NYY)

Gross has started each of the A’s last nine games, and appears likely to stay in the line-up as long as he continues to swing the bat well.  He is 9-24 in his last six games and is batting just under .300 for the season.  While there isn’t much to suggest that Gross will be able to establish significant value the rest of the way, he is a nice short term option for anyone in an AL-only league with a hole in the outfield.  Ride him while he is hot, and hope that he turns it into an everyday job for the rest of the season.  It’s not like the A’s have a lot of guys breathing down his neck for playing time.

Blalock, Hank 1B TB ($150 TC, - drop Kelley, Shawn RP SEA and $170 U, - drop Teagarden, Taylor C TEX)

With Pat Burrell out of the picture, the Rays have a big hole at the designated hitter position.  Enter Hank Blalock.  He may share at bats with Willy Aybar, but Blalock is clearly the better hitter and is more likely to emerge as the everyday starter.  Blalock has had an up and down career, but he is a reliable source of power, which could result in big numbers as a member of one of baseball’s best line-ups.  Run, don’t walk, to pick up Blalock.  He could pay off in a big way.

Santos, Sergio RP CHI ($110 TC, - drop Talbot, Mitch SP CLE and $10 U, - drop Jepsen, Kevin RP ANA)

Santos has been phenomenal all season, and gained some immediate value when White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen announced last week that Bobby Jenks was no longer his closer.  Sounds like great news for Santos, but don’t get overexcited.  Guillen loves Santos, but announced that saves opportunities would be based on match-up with Matt Thornton and J.J. Putz also in the mix.  If any of the three were to run away with the closer’s job, Santos may be the guy.  However, he is not a reliable source of consistent save opportunities at the moment, and may never be so.  He is worth adding in AL-only leagues, but not someone to break the bank over.
