It was an extremely slow week leading up to next weeks September call-ups, which are sure to cause a flurry of waiver wire activity next weekend. Here are this weeks pick-ups with a short analysis.

Blanco, Gregor OF KC ($70 U, - drop Frazier, Jeff OF DET and $17 TC, - drop Breslow, Craig RP OAK)
Things have broken right for Blanco lately. First the Royals acquired him from Atlanta, where he sat well down the Braves depth chart. Then the Royals sent Jose Guillen to the Giants, opening up a job in the outfield for Blanco. Blanco lacks pop and isn’t likely to post a high average, but his speed gives him instant value in AL-only leagues as long as he is getting everyday at bats. Blanco is more of a fourth outfielder type, but he is worth an add in AL-only leagues due to his circumstances.

Brown, Jordan OF CLE ($100 TC, - drop Sizemore, Grady OF CLE and $80 U, - drop Carp, Mike 1B SEA)
With Grady Sizemore down for the season, the Indians appear to be turning to Brown to fill the void in center field. The 26-year-old was hitting .308 at Triple-A Columbus at the time of his recall, and posted an impressive .335 average in Columbus in 2009. However, the truth is Brown has limited power and speed, and he is likely to post a solid average at best while meddling in a mediocre Indians line-up. Brown is likely to see a lot of at bats moving forward, making him worth an add in AL-only leagues, but don’t expect huge production out of Brown.

Haren, Dan SP ANA ($610 U, - drop Bedard, Erik SP SEA)
Clearly Haren is the biggest prize to make his way over to the American League thus far. Sure he hasn’t been great this year and had some difficulties in his first AL start, but Haren is a legit stud worthy of throwing a good deal of your remaining funds at. If you’ve got some cash to burn, make a strong bid for Haren.

Rzepczynski, Marc SP TOR ($150 U, - drop Huff, David SP CLE)
You know it’s a slow week if Marc Rzepcysnski (from here forward referred to as Marc R.) is the highlight of the waiver wire. Marc R. broke his finger in spring training and is just now returning to his spot in the Blue Jays rotation. Marc R. had a poor first start, but the lefty was surprisingly effective last season when he a 3.66 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. You certainly could do worse than Marc R. in AL-only keeper league in terms of low end starters, but I wouldn’t expect him to be as effective as he was in 2009.

Joyce, Matt OF TB ($118 TC, - drop Patterson, Eric OF OAK)
Prior to the start of the season Joyce was penciled in to be the Rays starting right fielder, and was commonly targeted as a must have sleeper amongst industry experts. However, a strained right elbow sidetracked the young slugger, and he has spent the majority of the season rehabbing. Although he is still unable to throw at 100 percent, Joyce has found his way back to the majors, and very likely will find himself earning some at bats in a Rays outfield that has struggled as of late. However, with B.J. Upton, Carl Crawford, Ben Zobrist, Reid Brignac, and Sean Rodriguez all fighting for at bats between the outfield positions and second base Joyce doesn’t have a clear path to playing time. However, if he hits like he is capable of, .293, 3 homeruns, 12 RBI in 25 Triple-A games this season, the Rays will have to find him at bats. He is a high upside option, but one that may not pan out at all for you.
